MSN Service with Nuvi 680

In my neck of the woods, the MSN service seems to be quite useful. Leaving the 12v cable plugged in even while the unit's in the house yields nearly constant updated data. However I'm wondering what to expect when I leave my home area and travel, say, though Chicago. If I'm just driving straight through, will I get updated traffic reports and gas price data, or would that involve an overnight stay for the data to download? I'm just wondering if the MSN service is only useful in my area, since it has more time to update. (I do realize that most areas of the country DON'T have the MSN service, but of course Chicago does.)

You will not get squat when out of the MSN signal area out in the boonies like I am. I can't get MSN services and I have free year that I can't use. I also need to be in a MSN area to activate the service too. Oh well.

MSN

Jamie:

I have taken my Nuvi 680 to Chicago and the MSN Direct does work but it takes a few hours for the info to download. How many hours I don't know exactly because each time I left the MSN receiver cable/power cable plugged in the rental car overnight. When I came out in the morning the data was up to date. The trip from Midway Airport to the office only takes about an hour or less and that was not enough time to update the Nuvi.

Just traveling through will not get you data - at least it has not for me when I traveled through areas that I know to have coverage.

I hope this helps.

Officer I'm sorry I was going the wrong way on that one-way street but my GPS told me to turn left ... Oh, I'm still getting a ticket, okay then the GPS will see ya in court!

Stan, That's exactly the

Stan,
That's exactly the info. I was looking for! I was hoping MSN did something smart like have it download traffic data first, then weather, then gas prices, then movies. If it did it in that order I would hope that at least traffic data would be complete for the 3-5 hours that I should be driving in the MSN coverage area.
Thanks for your help!
