what does it do?

Does it do new things now or is it just bug fixes?

Thanks, GE just updated

Thanks, GE just updated itself.

GE Keeps Advising Same "New" Updates are Available

Just FYI, I got tired of GE constantly telling me the SAME updates are available for my unit. I contacted Garmin, they said they've received numerous complaints on this issue, it remains unresolved in this new version, and I should just ignore the alerts in GE that new software is available if I've already installed it.

Basically, they know their software stinks.

Bloatware

Totally useless bloatware. I don't use it and still can keep my Garmin unit up-to-date without any fuss.

I'm not

I'm not sure it's just their software. I get the same list of available updates over and over from GE, myDashboard, and WebUpdater, no matter how many times I select and install the stuff. It looks like thier installation process is as much at fault here.

Yes, I mentioned all this to Garmin. They are aware of it and apologized. They said their engineers have been aware of it for some time. Strange that they can't seem to fix it. And their work around is -- "Ignore the updates you know you have installed."

LOL

Auto-Updated

Mine just auto-updated itself also.

Thank you

Thanks for the info. Mine auto-updated this morning. Had to re-enter the device nickname, and some updates were repeats, but all is well now.

question

So for a while I was using the map updater and only recently realised there is this Garmin Express thing. What is the difference between these two applications? Is there any benefit to using one over the other?

How do we answer this?

mapupdater seems to work all the time. Garmin express is another story. Some reports it works flawlessly while others have numerous issues. We can't seem to figure out what the exact problem is.

Getting rid of Garmin Express would be the wise thing to do.

Getting rid of Garmin Express would be the wise thing to do. Use MapUpdater to update your Garmin device.

Not in my case...

I pretty much have to use Garmin Express (on my MacBook Pro) to successfully update my maps. MapUpdater fails in the same spot while downloading every single time. I've tried at least ten times on the last map update and had the same results with MapUpdater. Garmin Express downloaded/installed successfully on the first try. Other user's results may be different...that's likely why they are keeping both methods (at least for now).

You may have hit on something (which may have already been brought up and I simply missed it). That being - [maybe] Garmin Express works well with Macs but not PCs, and MapUpdater works well with PCs but not Macs. Who'd have thunk such a thang? All I know is that Garmin Express works with my relatively new PC using Windows 7 much like someone trying to download pictures from a 1950s Brownie camera onto their computer using a soup can and kite string.

Garmin Express is so pathetically bad that whoever at Garmin is responsible for it should have his ass kicked by a herd of hungry laughing hyenas and be made to eat sardines laced with Ex-Lax for the rest of their life.

I also had the issue

I also had the issue upon updating it lost the nicknames for both of my Nuvis and forgot it had done the last 4 updates available. This also happened the LAST time GE updated (minus the nicknames). It's getting tiresome and this bug needs to be fixed.
