Is Webupdater done?

So I hadn't updated my 3490LMT in months. In fact I was still at F/W v.7.50 and I had left the maps at 2012.40 since there were complaints at the time of losing some LA info on the next map update. Anyway, I'm going on vaco this week and thought it would be nice to update to the latest mapset and F/W but when I did, I was forced into installing Garmin Communicator and Garmin Express. I was coming off a fresh install and had lost all prior installed apps. So the question is did they eliminate Webupdater? I honestly miss the days of installing this stuff w/o having an active connection. That goes for mapsets from DVD's and downloading F/W updates locally.

A Google search resulted in this link for a direct download of WebUpdater:

Whew!

Whew, you got my attention and had me scared for a second.

My WebUpdater program still works and still can be downloaded from Garmin:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=931

so WebUpdater contains to work to update firmware, voices, text, etc. on Garmin devices. Whew!

You mention also wanting to update your mapset and that's where Garmin forced you to install Garmin Express (assuming you tried a map update through myGarmin or Lifetime Updater where you were directed to install Garmin Express).

Note that Garmin Express works just fine for many people but that a significant minority have problems with it--and others don't like other features of Garmin Express and prefer not to use it and to not even have it installed to their computers.

At least right now, there still is a way to avoid Garmin Express for map updates. The answer is GarminMapUpdater. See:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40555

So in summary, WebUpdater still works and still can be easily found and installed--and for now, map updates can be done with GarminMapUpdater. The combination of these two programs will let you keep your device up to date without using Garmin Express. If you find anything incorrect in what I say, please let us know so we can update our knowledge of what Garmin's offering to us.

[Edit] As I was typing the above, I just knew that someone would beat me to a reply. Good work, t92!

Great

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure since it's been a LONG time since I did the updates and it looked like I was forced into going that direction although it all worked fine. I will need to download those two later but I'm wondering if it's only a mater of time until they don't work. Hopefully not.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear that Webupdater still works

It is so much quicker and easier than any other method and it allows an easy update to the map in the computer at the same time. grin

Sorry, but WebUpdater can not be used to update maps. I think you're referring to GarminMapUpdater.

Used Webupdater yesterday to download a few self selected updates. I like being able to pick what is added to my GPS and what isn't.

Wow

Scared me for a minute there, I thought they had pulled the plug on webupdater. shock

Glad It's Still Working

I'm glad Web Updater is still working. It's my favorite way to update.

WebUpdater or MapUpdater?

Are you sure you mean WebUpdater? It is program to make updates of GPS firmware, language files, Traffic Receiver firmware. It has nothing to do with maps. It's still available from Garmin:
http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

If you are looking for map updates it was done with MapUpdater. And yes, this software is discontinued by Garmin and replaced with Express. It's not easy to find it even on Garmin website, but there are links from some topics on this forum. So far WebUpdater is still working and can be use to update maps. For how long nobody knows. Officially WebUpdater was replaced by Express.

Webupdater

I used it wiuthout any problem for the last update.

It's just been abandoned by Garmin in favor of the Lifetime updater.

Garmin Express Map Update

I used Garmin Express to update my map on the last release. It went without a hitch and it might be my imagination, but I think Garmin Express is actually a little faster than Map Updater. However, I uninstall it (Garmin Express) when I'm finished as I believe it's a resource hog running continuously in the background as it does. YMMV!
