Formatted nuvi 765

By accident I just formatted my nuvi 765 device. I have no backup (doh!) or files on the SD card that can help me. Is there any way I can recover/reinstall the OS?
Thanks in advance.
Preboot and Cure.
I assume you can no longer get the computer to recognize the nuvi in storage mode when you connect it with USB. If that is the case, read through this thread and you may find some help: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/38905

No such luck...
I can't get the device into preboot mode, so I'm not able to Cure. If I have an SD card in the GPS, it will boot normally and I can see both the GPS and SD card in Windows as USB drives (Mass Storage Mode, i guess)
If only I can get a copy of the OS files, I should be able to copy them to the device and hope it will spring back to live.
Help anyone?
That helps.
If you can access the internal storage as a disk drive, here is something you can try:
1. Make sure the internal storage volume is formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS
2. Create folder \Garmin on the internal storage volume.
3. Download the latest firmware file for the 7x5 series nuvi (version 5.40) from this site: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/agree.html
4. Copy this file into the \Garmin folder of your device and rename it to gupdate.gcd.
5. Safely disconnect your device from the computer, boot it up and see if it will install the firmware.
6. If you are successful, reconnect your device and use webupdater to install whatever it offers you.
7. If you have a lifetime map subscription, re-install the latest map using MapUpdater.

Good suggestion, but...
Still no luck
I copied and renamed the firmware to the device, but no change. The firmware isn't installed and the device still won't boot without the SD card in it.
Got other good tips?
.
Is there a file named garmindevice.xml in the \Garmin folder? What other files do you see in the \Garmin folder? What does the screen show when it fails to boot?
You say you can boot it with a SD card in it. Does it boot all the way up and show the "Where To" menu? Does it show any maps?

.
There is no GarminDevice.xml in the \Garmin folder.
All the files are erased from the unit. Only the \Garmin\gupdate.gcd file is on the unit. The SD card is completely empty.
Without the SD card, the Garmin logo is displayed along with "nüvi 765, copyright 2012..." in the bottom. Then it flashes, and just the logo is displayed. It flashes again, and the two screens loops.
With the SD card in, it boots to the "Where To" menu. There is no map, but I can access all the menus and change settings.
In order to access storage mode, PIN code has to be enabled, and the SD card must be in.

Do you have any tips how to restore my GPS?

I am about out of ideas. But if I were you, I would remove the pin code until you get the other problems resolved. I know that having the PIN enabled alters the sequence of boot operations and can cause issues if the unit does not do a clean boot.
Then I would try finding and putting a basemap in the \Garmin folder. The basemap file name is gmapbmap.img. It is not locked to the device so does not require any unlock codes. Although Garmin does not make it available for download, if you do some Googling, you will find it. Or if you have a friend that has a nuvi, you can copy the gmapbmap.img file off their device.

Thanks for the help, Alan.
Nothing has helped, so far, but I keep my fingers crossed and hope I get the device working again.

There's a reason why I posted that. I was being gentle.
When you format with no image or full back up on hand, you'll then have to ask for Garmin's help, if they give it to you. We cannot give you the files you need.

So are you saying you removed the pin code and put a gmapbmap.img file on the device and it still doesn't boot? It would help us help you if you gave a little more detail about whether or not you tried the suggestions.

Sorry for not posting the results...
This is what I tried so far:
I have copied the basemap from http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=461 to the GPS.
I also copied a map from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ to the device.
I removed the PIN code but left the SD card in. The device won't boot without it. I can't enter storage mode without the SD card.
The GPS boots, but no basemap is shown. The map from openstreetmap.nl is showed, both when booting (bottom of screen) and on the screen. Under "Map Info" I only see "OSM generic routable"
No matter what I try, I can't get the GPS recognized as a USB device, so Updater.exe or WebUpdater can't find it. Only way to get files to the unit, is in storage mode.

I think that the Garmin programs are looking for removable devices that have a folder named Garmin and, then, a file in that folder named GarminDevice.xml.
I have never tried to determine what the minimum contents of this .xml file must be to cause Garmin to treat it as a unit that it recognizes. However, I was able to load POIs to a USB stick that had a Garmin Folder with the following file which I had named "@minimum xml version.xml" (note it is not GarminDevice.xml so Garmin may be only looking for an .xml file that has certain contents and, by the way, POI Loader created a POI folder inside the Garmin folder).
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
-<Device xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GarminDevice/v2 http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GarminDevicev2.xsd" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GarminDevice/v2">-<Model><PartNumber>006-B0870-00</PartNumber><SoftwareVersion>450</SoftwareVersion><Description>nüvi 765</Description></Model><Id>1111111111</Id><RegistrationCode>XX1111X</RegistrationCode>-<Unlock><Code>XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX</Code></Unlock>
</Device>
Since your computer sees your device, try putting the contents above into a file called "GarminDevice.xml" in a folder called Garmin on the device. Then see if any Garmin program will recognize it.
Please report.
Also, if other members have some time and a USB stick, please try this out and report.
Thanks
Success!
I managed to get the device working again!
I got the feeling that the internal storage was corrupted, since the device only booted when an SD card was inserted. I formatted it according to the guide here: http://www.noeman.org/gsm/garmin-tutorials/252968-how-proper..., and the computer now detects the GPS.
As I write this, Garmin Express is updating the map on the GPS, and everything seems to work correct now.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions, no doubt you pointed me in the right direction

Well done! Or....

Are anything of these correct?

Congratulations!
Glad you got it working. Your symptoms were something different from anything I have read about in several different forums.
