Only $ dollar sign POI's displaying on map

My neighborhood has a restaurant, a coffee shop, a pizza place, a chinese takeout place, a liquor store, gas, grocery, and 2 banks. When driving around my neighborhood my Garmin chooses to only show 2 icons on the map, and they are both the $ sign icon indicating a bank or ATM. Why is that?

I have the Garmin 2595LMTHD purchased from Costco just a few days ago. Overall I like the navigation but I am used to my previous vehicle that had OEM navigation that displayed restaurants, etc. as I drove.

Garmin POIs are not to be trusted

You need to experiment a bit more, look in other areas while the Garmin is zoomed in close to see the POIs, as well as trying to look up some POIs from the menus. My guess as to what you'll find is that the Garmin POIs are very incomplete and frequently don't show everything that you would expect in an area.

Some may come here and say that Garmin only includes POIs that people pay to have included, and even a Garmin phone tech has told me something similar. But that can't be the full truth, because in my area Garmin has included POIs for many things that don't really exist. Perhaps some of these are based on old records of business owners addresses rather than where their store actually is, I'm pretty certain that the bulk of these bogus entries didn't pay anything for their inclusion.

The sad thing is that this may completely mislead you. Imagine running out of gas and checking your GPS to find that the closest station was a 3 mile walk back the way that you had come. Then after making the trek, and carrying a heavy can of gas the same distance, discovering that there was another station a half mile further that simply wasn't included in the POIs.

settings

In the settings for your new unit is an option for which POI are displayed while driving about the neighborhood. I strongly suggest you download the full manual (not that quick start guide packed in the box) from Garmin. Once you have the full manual, click on the blue LEARN tab and follow the beginner's tutorials. Here's a link to get you started:

Welcome to The Factory!

The only options my Garmin

The only options my Garmin 2595 has under Map Layers is: Places along the road.

Wow, pretty darn generic don't ya think? So for the people who quickly pointed me to the manual (which I already read) can you guys tell me more about this feature?

Garmin Support

I heard back from Garmin support and this is what they said:

Garmin:
I would be happy to assist you with this, not all POI's will have icons listed on the map screen. This would cause the screen to be very cluttered and difficult to use. For the most part, you should only see a few POI icons, however all of the POIs should be available in the Categories section.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Me:
I see that having all POI's displayed would be a huge mess in the screen. A nice feature would be for the user to select X number of categories to show per their preference. For example, I would choose gas stations and restaurants. For some crazy reason banks and ATM's show now and I have no clue why Garmin picked those to default show on map??

Garmin:
Unfortunately there is not a way to change which POI icons you see on the screen but I would be happy to pass this suggestion on.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

So I am now in support of the first response to this thread that Garmin gets $$ from certain entities in exchange for being displayed on the map. I have now noticed that every time there is a Wells Fargo nearby, or a Dairy Queen, or a Holiday gas station, they are displayed on my map.

No rhyme or reason.

Oh well, time to start making some custom POI's. This site is perfect for that and I cannot thank the POI contributors enough.
