Successful update of Garmin 3790T to 2014 map

I’m one of those who had problems updating the map and spent several hours with Garmin’s help desk on 3 July 203 with zero progress.

Finally found the solution to my problem by using a SD 8GB card and following instructions in the two notes below after I BACKED UP my device with GarMim Express.

"What do I do if my device doesn't support the SD card feature during the Garmin Express map update?"
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={a209e880-9319-11e2-65d0-000000000000}

"How do I install mapping to my device with MapInstall?"
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={5af8a260-fd05-11dc-ec92-000000000000}

After I completed the update, I restored the device and reposted my POIs.

Hope this helps someone.

Curious

Just curious, the 3790 has 8GB of storage. Why are you even bothering with the MicroSD? I have the 2450 that has 4GB, and it fits the maps just fine.

Garmin Nuvi 2450

Understand and my device had 4 GB free

before I tried to update.

WAG is that Garmin Express does not recognize the actual free space so I tried an extra 8GB SD card I had.

I have no idea why but the steps I used worked whereas Garmin’s help desk was helpless.

I'm not understanding this either. I use Garmin express for both my units and never have had an issue, even with webupdater its never failed. I leave my poi's on them both of them. I still have 2.8 GB free on my 3790.

@jody

garmin express is known to be real buggy on a lot of computers. Had you gone with mapupdater you would not have needed a card.

Also, GE does not back up ALL of the files on the GPS. What it does back up will not recover your gps if there is an issue.

Back it up by hooking to the computer. Search her for how to do it.

And you should not have needed to re install your custom poi files.

3790T

Just in case it matters, I'm not sure if the map update to 2014.10 being discussed here with a nuvi 3790T is City Navigator NT Europe map update which is a bigger update than City Navigator North America NT or if is a North American map update.

I'm not sure why someone in Alabama would buy a nuvi with European maps but this may be why a problem arose.

The 3790T is a European model that comes with City Navigator NT Europe. It does not come with Lifetime Maps so that would have to be an additional purchase. If City Navigator North America NT was added, it was added as a standalone purchase with our without lifetime updates.

If the issues here were due to space considerations, it may be due to the presence of both Europe and North America maps--adding the size of the two continents' .img files and .jcv files may be stressing the 3790T's internal 8GB and forcing the need for the SD card.

Have you

Have you deleted any files? I ask because I only have 1.98Gb free on my 3790. I agree that's lots of space for the North America map update.

Actually according to Garmins website the 3790T is a North American model but only comes with traffic.
Now it may be that the OP does not really know which model he/she has. I would assume that he/she has the LMT since he/she does not mention a charge being levied by Garmin for the 2014.10 maps.

I believe this to be correct. MY 3790T did NOT come with Lifetime Maps out-of-the-box, however I did purchase Lifetime Maps for it and thus created my own 3790(LM)T. mrgreen

That's odd

Hmm, Garmin's gotta get their act together. Here's what Google found for me with a "nuvi 3790T" search:

I will accept that your link makes more sense in Alabama though wink

.

My 2595lmt still has plenty of room left after the update

PS

PS--Isn't it true that in the "old days" a nuvi xxxT was a European model while a xxxLT was a US model with free traffic? If so, I wonder when they changed.

I did a bit of searching myself after reading your post Craig and found this:

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/prod87930.html

I'm pretty sure that initially, Garmin released the 3490T in T version only (which is the unit I purchased when it was newly released), then later added the LMT and I believe discontinued the T version and retained the LMT version. I had forgotten about this later addition. Regardless, I still have a 3790(LM)T as I purchased LM aspect of it. mrgreen

1.98Gb is plenty since your old map files would be overwritten each time. You'll loose a bit free space each time you upgrade. I deleted all help files and all languages files except English and German, and some other files also. My poi's amount to 50MB not a biggy there. I also use the large jcv file. So the answer is yes, I have deleted files

OK

OK, I haven't deleted any files on the 3790 so that probably explains the difference.
