Several Questions About Maps and OpenStreetMaps

I just bought two old nuvi's from a garage sale:

GPS 1: Nuvi 205 with USA 2009 maps
GPS 2: Nuvi 200W with USA 2008 maps

Since the Navteq maps cost so much, I decided to install OpenStreetMaps (are they much worse than Navteq by the way?). I downloaded them from here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

Then I copy and pasted the GMAPSUPP.IMG file to my GPS and started it up. The map showed up in my map settings on the GPS and I checked the box.

I have several questions:

1. When I tap "View Map", it shows only the tiles I selected to download, which is what I expected. But if I tap the map in the background, it goes to that overhead view where you can click and drag, I can see the whole country (possibly the whole world). Is the Navteq map showing, even though its not checked, or is this the basemap?

2. Does the basemap ever get updated?

3. Is it safe to delete the basemap? (I heard this will brick some units)

4. Does the file I got from OSM include the points of interest and stuff?

5. Will the POI from the Navteq map still show, even though its unchecked?

Answers

1 It is the basemap.
2 no
3 no
4 yes, some usually
5 no

Two thoughts--well, maybe three

1. Go to myGarmin and see if you can register the two used nuvis. If not because they're already registered, you may want to visit the garage sale seller and if the nuvis were registered in their name, see if you can get them to deregister the devices to allow you to register them.

myGarmin:

https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/login.htm?service=https%3A%2F...

I suggest this for all who buy used Garmin GPS devices. If buying from craigslist or ebay, etc., ask about this before buying. It's not critical if you don't succeed but may come in handy at some point.

2. Rather than deleting nuvi files, you can disable them by renaming them. I suggest adding .disabled to make it xxxx.yyy.disabled. That makes it easy to re-enable the file if needed.

3. If your desire to delete files is to create more space in the nuvi, please tell us you have a hard drive or DVD-R backup of the files on the unaltered nuvi before you start deleting files which is helpful if a required file is deleted at some point, or to replace a corrupt file, etc.

.

1. Thank you

2. So certain models have certain basemaps and the basemaps for those models never change? Example:

Garmin Nuvi 200W bought a long time ago has basemap A
Garmin Nuvi 200W bought recently has basemap A also
Garmin Nuvi 1450 bought a recently has basemap B

If basemap B in newer than basemap A, is tghis example correct?

------------------------------

3. I know I need to back them up first. But I heard with some units that if you start the unit with no maps, it will brick, and not even register on the computer anymore, rendering it useless. So I don't want to try it unless I know this will not happen.

------------------------------

4. What determines this? Does it mater where I download the file from? (I used http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/)

------------------------------

5. So if I have the box unchecked for the Navteq map, it is completely disabled, including the points of interest and all map modes?

------------------------------

6. The one unit still has data on it from the previes owner, how can I delete all of their points of interest and restore everything to factory default?

------------------------------

7. The the OSM maps much worse than the official Navteq maps?

------------------------------

Thank you

Why The Recommendation to Attempt to Register These?

Hey Craig,

What is your thought around him registering these used NUVI's? He's already said that Garmin maps are too costly. Why would he want or need to register these devices if he doesn't intend to purchase/download maps from Garmin.com? (Yes, I realize there are also occasional firmware updates but I'm not sure they bring all that much value in my own personal experience.)
