That's not as strange as it sounds. There are a significant number of foods we call "nuts" that aren't really "nuts" at all (in the botanical sense). Peanuts are actually a legume.

Certainly there are people who are allergic to "tree nuts" (or "true nuts", as opposed to "culinary nuts") and are not allergic to peanuts. I'm one of those people.

In the US peanuts used to be called circus nuts, Planters always called peanuts - peanuts.
