Coconino National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map

[Updated 4/16/2014]

Greetings,

The 2012 discussion of the existence of (and need for) Motor Vehicle Use Maps has been discussed in the thread:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/36274

The older thread discusses why the Forests are now coming up with Motor Vehicle Use maps rather than the old standard "all forest" maps.

The new 2014 MVUM map is now out for the Coconino National Forest in Northern Arizona and much improved. It's available as a computer file (pdf), an Android Smartphone or Tablet app, an iPhone/iPad app, and as a Garmin map:

http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/coconino/maps-pubs

or more specifically:

[Update 4/18/15] The 2015 Coconino NF maps are out. The above links continue to work and the 2015 Garmin map works fine for me. There were no changes to the "look" of the map so the 2015 revision only revised which Forest Roads are open and closed.

MVUM Garmin Download

At this site there are also downloadable Garmin MVUM for the Pike and San Isabel National Forests in Colorado.

Not Garmin, but related

I was playing with the information in some of these documents, and if you have an Apple device (iPhone, iPad) then I would suggest downloading the Avenza PDF Maps App to it. Once you download and install, you can search for maps in your area, or anywhere else on the map. I was amazed at the number of downloadable maps from the US Forest Service (and other areas) for all kinds of different map types, not just MVUMs. Most of these are free, but there are also onces you can download for a fee.

When I searched for these on the US Forest Service sites, most did not show up, but they were found on the app.

And for those not on iDevices...

It appears there is in fact a beta for the Avenza PDF Maps app for Android:

http://www.pdf-maps.com/android/beta

It doesn't have the in-app map store YET but supposedly they are working on implementing this--and especially if the app is free or at a good price (below $8.00 or so) this could be a decent competition to Backcountry Navigator Pro or Locus Pro (the latter of which seems to be the granddaddy of multi-map Android map programs).

2014 maps are out

The 2014 MVUM maps are out. I've tested the Garmin map and it's great. I've revised the original post, above, to reflect this.

There are slight visual differences in the map on automotive Garmin devices, even among the various series of nuvi models. The most problematic nuvi I've found is the 2460 which fails to display road numbers, icons and text in Navigation mode. For this model, you need to tap the map to go to the static map to see these additions. For the other nuvi models I tested, road numbers, etc. will appear directly on the map in Navigation mode.

I am bookmarking this, need to find it again.
Thanks

Not for GPS

Went to the link, set up an acct. Went through the check out process and that's where it ended. It appears the MVUM map for the Ocala NF is only available for smart phones and not Garmin GPS.
To bad crying

Too bad

That's too bad. I suggest you find the person responsible for MVUM at Ocala and prod them for a Garmin version. Let them know that other Forests are doing this.

PS—Welcome to The Factory.
