New member / Garmin 1490LMT

Hi,
I recently purchased a Garmin 1490LMT. I have been looking for a Garmin for awhile and ran across this one brand new for 110.00. I hope it is an OK model.
There looks like a lot of information shared on this forum and I will be browsing around more. Looking forward to reading and gathering information.
I'm attempting the update maps and registering now and have moved a bunch of unused stuff to the SD card. Now it looks like I have almost the full 2GB on my Garmin so I probably messed up somewhere.
Looking forward to joining the community here. I'm off to play and try to get this thing configured.

welcome

Welcome to the site. You will find lots of helpful information that will help you enjoy your unit to its fullest.

The top right of the screen has a link to the FAQs, I suggest you start with them. Then, before you make any changes to your unit, I suggest you do the beginner exercises. They will help acquaint with some of the features of your unit and help prepare you for installing additional oints of interest.

Good unit

The 1490 is the last of the good units from Garmin. The only drawback is the small capacity, only 2 Megs, but easily circumvented by getting an SD card which you already did.
That is a good price for that unit; where did you buy it?

A good unit

Had the 1490LMT for over 3 years - LOVE IT !

Won't leave home without it !

Large screen, Bluetooth, Traffic - everything I want in a GPS unit ! As edserrano said just use an SD card for your memory added capacity.

Purchased

Thanks for the Welcome and good advice. I purchased the Garmin at Cabelas in Council Bluffs IA. They had taken about 8 units off the floor to make room for new models. They were in the Bargain Bin.

Sorry to say, I'm in trouble with my new unit all ready. When I try to look at POI that are loaded, or anything, I get a "no data" message. I'm going to check it out further tonight. It says it is updated though, so it may not be a catastrophe.

This is a great site. Some of the 1490s had a problem with the mini USB port. I suggest that you wrap the 12v cord around the unit one loop to relieve strain on the connection. I hope you made a full backup copy of your device.

Don't panic yet

Welcome to The Factory. You will find a lot of useful info here and a lot of helpful folks willing to work with you. If we do help, all we'd like is a reply from you that your problem has been solved.

There are two likely culprits for a "No Data" error.

The easiest one to fix is an unchecked map. Go to your Map Info page on the nuvi (possibly tap Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo). If you see a map there, probably some version of City Navigator, look to see if the map is unchecked. If so, just add a check in the checkbox to enable the map and your No Data should be history.

The worse problem is if you see nothing on the Map Info page which means the unit has no map or a corrupt map. Get back to us if that's the issue.

If you just purchased the unit, it should be able to get a free map update to the current map version (2013.40). I see that you've tried this already and it may have failed. You do have the option to reinstall the map and that's what I suggest you do next if my earlier "unchecked map" doesn't solve your problem. I suggest before updating to the new map that you buy and install a 4GB SD card to the unit and then let the map update install the update to the SD card. Just remember that if the map resides on the SD card that the SD card is now an integral part of your nuvi and that you'll lose your map when the SD card is removed. Your current 2GB SD card is really too small and given the minimal cost of a 4GB, go for that before you try too many things.

You also say you've moved a lot of stuff from the Garmin to the SD card. Please explain. Unneeded files are much better stored on a computer backup hard drive or recordable DVD rather than the nuvi's SD card.

Please also go through the Getting Started and faqs on this site. If you're doing a lot of tinkering, you really want to have a full computer backup of your initial functioning nuvi drive--then after updates, backup the update as well.

I'll look in FAQ

Thanks, I'll look in the FAQ's and browse for my problem. I do not show any maps on my garmin. I plug my unit in and the maps (1.7GB anyway)show on my 8GB sd card. It says my unit is up to date when checked though. I can see my card and unit on the computer but I really think I should be heading to "not reading SD card?" I'll post here if I get any closer to seeing something.

Well I went through a bunch of posts and tried loading from mygarmin, garmin express. re-installed garmin express, tried reloading anyway I could do. Took out my card and it still says no updates available. It says my unit has an unlocked 2013.40 map+P. Date unlocked was 4-6-13. So it is in there somewhere but it does not show up in mymaps, or in the area where I should see it to check it. I have a map on my sd card at 1.7 GB and my garmin is 1.76GB used. I don't see a map folder on the garmin, just the sd card.
I think I am at a loss. I updated software and still no data.
I think I am at a loss.

welcome!

ENjoy your stay.

Unrepairble?

I thought owning a Garmin would be fun. Not so I guess. My Garmin never got off the ground even though it was brand new.
Garmin support even tried to put on the maps and it was stuck at 11% just like about 6 times before when I tried. Maybe it is time to re-think my decision or chalk it up as a lesson.

Thanks for the comment: Enjoy your stay. But I have to go away, because I can't play, sorry to say, and by the way, Have a nice day.

New nuvi? -- warranty replacement?

If a new nuvi doesn't work and Garmin's Customer Service folks can't fix it remotely, you should have them replace the nuvi under the warranty. Why can't this be done? There may be something going on here that you're not telling us.

Return

I bought it in the Bargain Corner at Cabelas with a no return policy. I'll call Garmin tonight and see if they can do something. You have a point about warranty though.I guess I thought I was out of luck. Maybe not? Thanks for the lighting bolt!

WooHoo

I called Garmin again today and got it fixed. The rep thought that since my computer had an AMD processor in it instead of a intell, could have been a problem. I also plugged the usb cord into the back instead of the front so I'd have a faster usb connection.
It barely fit on the garmin so he copied it over to the SD card to leave a bunch of room on the Garmin instead of 2mb.
I'm happy to say that now I can play.
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.

Welcome!

Enjoy the site!

Glad it worked

Welcome!
I know the USB port on your computer and even the cord you use can have an effect on how well it works. I see a lot of that when downloading to my cell phone too.

I have also owned a 1490 for years and never leave home without it. The only issue I have with it is the very small red light camera alert. It is very small. Could easily be twice the size.

Welcome !
