Firmware Update (v3.10) for GTMxx Traffic Receiver Type 3

Well, so much for referring to the manual for a definitive answer. After a few years, they'll add back the feature to new units with the grey icon again...and announce it as new and improved.

If it's new, how can it be 'improved'? And, vis a vis.

My 3 years old nuvi 3790T came with GTM35 lifetime traffic receiver. About a year ago I have updated the GTM35 firmware to v.3.10 (using the 3790T for the update). The GTM35 S/N:1VY077494, ID:3804380079.

My new nuvi 3597LMTHD came with GTM60 lifetime traffic receiver. This GTM60 S/N:2DD236615, ID:3852437932 and has firmware v.2.10 (no other firmware is available for this unit).

These two traffic receivers (GTM35 and GTM60) are permanently installed into the dashboard of two separate vehicles. Occasionaly we switch GPS devices between the two cars and noticed, that when the 3790T is connected to the GTM60 the traffic function is not available. A message comes up on the 3790T screen: "get a traffic subscription code and enter the code number".
Where can I find this subscription code?
Or, perhaps the nuvi 3790 is not compatible with the GTM60 ?

I agree with Alan. I also have both a GTM-35 (included with my nuvi 3790) and a GTM-60 (included with my nuvi 3490) and can verify that the GTM 60 is NOT compatible with the 3790. It will power the device fine but the traffic feature is not compatible.

After allowing GArmin Express to update the firmware to 6.20 and the GTM xxx update traffic no longer works at all. All subscriptions were erased.

My GTM 60 is not responding (have service request in) but after an update, the 255W now renders "Traffic receiver requires software update.", which I understand is not definitive, but also lists traffic as a setup option and states "no subscriptions available"/"add". It also fails to work with my 3597 (3597LMTHD), but is different from what I received on the 255W before the software update.

So I have what may be a defective GTM 60 but the 255W now seems to know the cable/receiver is a traffic receiver.

I'm not sure that I follow all that you've said, but as far a I can tell, the nuvi 255W is not listed as a compatible device with the GTM 60 HD Digital Traffic Receiver.

The GTM 60 should work with the nuvi 3597 so if yours isn't, tell us more of your problem.

I agree with CraigW. The message "Traffic receiver requires software update" is the way (not a very good way, but that's Garmin for you) the unit tells you that that particular nuvi model is incompatible with it. I get the same message if I try to use my 3790 with the traffic receiver rhat came with my 3490.

Also note that it has nothing to do with the subscription on the traffic unit either. The nuvi simply does not see the traffic receiver as being compatible.

As the others have mentioned your 255W is not compatible with the GTM60, so that is your problem.

The updated "Traffic receiver requires software update" probably is an artifact of updated compatibility with a different traffic cord. My best guess is that the 255W recognizes the cable as what it is - a traffic cord, but the 255W is not capable of driving the GTM 60, even for non-HD traffic. A further guess - HD traffic is probably decoded in the cord, but the GPS must switch between HD and regular FM, which is not a capability of the 255W.

The actual problem was a failure in the powered magnet mount for the 3597LMTHD. The 3597 will not receive traffic directly through the USB port, which is used for data transfers and accepts power. With a replacement power mount, the 3597 works well.

Whether the traffic information will actually be useful is another issue.

I am hoping I can get an update for my Traffic Receiver, it seems sometimes it doesn't even notice the delays and wanting to give them to me.
