Firmware Update (v3.10) for GTMxx Traffic Receiver Type 3

A firmware update v3.10 for the GTMxx Traffic Receiver has been released.

Garmin wrote:

Download the update to your nuvi using WebUpdater. The update is then applied to the GTMxx via the nuvi when it's connected to the GTMxx.

According to my info, this "Type 3" receiver is included with the nuvi 34xx & 35xx units and possibly others that I'm personally unaware of.

EDIT: I just checked my 37xx and the update is available for that unit's GTMxx as well.

The last few firmware updates (main system software) for the nuvi 34xx (at least) have affected the performance of traffic receiver for the worse with very frequent "searching for service" messages (at least here in SoCal). Hopefully this GTMxx v3.10 update with alleviate this issue. I have yet to update mine, possibly later on today.

When I checked WebUpdater, an update was available for my 3760.

It took only a second or two for the update to complete successfully.

grin Did the update on my 3790LMT traffic receiver. Took about a minute to install the update to the receiver and very quickly it was showing all traffic problems within about 250 miles of my location.

My nuvi 2460LMT also received this update and it was seen both by WebUpdater and Garmin Express. I let GE do my update this time.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up.
I'll update mine as soon as I'm back home.

YES!

Awesome news! I have always suspected there were problems with the traffic on my unit after updating the FW on my 2595 several releases back. The traffic has never been the same. Garmin tech support basically gave me the ole "blank stare" response when I reported it.

I hope this update also applies to my unit. I'll check and report back with the results.

The old GTM 20 traffic receiver used by the nuvi 7x0 and 8x5 series does not show this firmware traffic update on my 750 and 855, so there must be some point when maybe Type 3 receivers replaced earlier versions--let's call them Type 1 and Type 2 for no particular reason wink

What you say is correct, charlesd45.s Nuvi 265 uses the GTM35 traffic receiver.
WebUpdater did show the update was available for my 2460LMT with the GTM35 Traffic receiver.
My 660 with a GTM20 did NOT show any updates available.

As a side note I know I have this problem, and I think you mentioned it also in a past post that the 2460 has a quirk regarding the "Database for FM Traffic Providers" update in Webupdater.

I have checked the box to update numerous times in the past but it still appears as an update even though I know it is updated.

Using WebUpdater to upgrade to the 3.10 Firmware, I was hoping this new upgrade would correct that but it did not, the available update continues to appear.
Since you used Garmin Express to install the update, I wonder if it corrected the wrong information displayed in WebUpdater.

Another flub by Garmin...

This will probably be long so...

This update indicated that it was for my 3490LMT and it indeed downloaded the update file to the nuvi...

BUT, upon connecting the 3490LMT to the traffic receiver (GTM60), I never got the "Updating traffic receiver" message and no indication that the v3.10 firmware was flashed to the GTM60...I checked the GTM firmware version under Settings>Device>About which still listed it as v2.0. This is what it was previously. I tried multiple times with the same result. I tried WebUpdater in addition to Garmin Express with the same result...no update applied.

Next, I tried the 3790 along with it's bundled GTM35 and got the "Updating traffic receiver" message and verified that firmware v3.10 was flashed to the GTM35 under the About section.

OK, something is funny here...

Looking at the file that is downloaded for the update (the same file is downloaded for both the nuvi 3790/GTM35 & the nuvi 3490/GTM60) in the .System/RemoteSW/006B090100.GCD, I pull up the nuvi 37xx/GTM35 diagnostics screen (with the GTM connected) and check the GTM diagnostics. The Prod(uct) ID is 901 (part # 006-B0901-00) which coincides with the full part number displayed in GarminDevice.xml.

Next, I do the same for the 34xx/GTM60 and check out it's Prod(uct) ID which shows 1399 (part # 006-B1399-00) and NOT 901. So this update is not meant to be used with the GTM60, part number 1399

GTM60 Part number is: 006-B1399-00 *NO* valid update & firmware remains at v2.00

GTM35 Part number is: 006-B0901-00 verified update to firmware v3.10

All details aside, try the update with your particular nuvi/GTM. If you get the "Updating traffic receiver" message after booting/connecting to your GTM, then you're likely updated. Verify your GTM version (with the GTM connected to the nuvi) under it's Settings/About/Device (or similar).

If you DON'T get the "Updating traffic receiver" message after booting/connecting to your GTM, then you likely had NO update. Again, verify with your nuvi connected to the GTM under it's Settings/About/Device (or similar).

You do mean firmware 3.10, correct? What are the GTM part numbers/ProdID's? Check using the diagnostics with the unit connected to the GTM:

From the Map screen:

1. Press the Speed field
2. Press the compass heading (ex. NE) for ~7 seconds.

No "updating" message was seen on first boot up after 3.10 was installed. After downloading and installing the 3.10 firmware update, I see from the diags screen: Prod ID 1257; and from the About screen: GTM 2.20.

I expect you're right and the 3.10 update to my 2460 did not "take." My test was done connected to my traffic/power cord with the vehicle engine running but without receiving any traffic since I'm about 100 miles from the nearest area that offers traffic.

The traffic receiver that came with my nuvi 2460LMT was a GTM 36. [Not a typo, it's a GTM 36, not a GTM 35.]

And this "v2.10" value is under "Prod ID" on the Traffic receiver status in the diagnostics? Or is the v2.10 the firmware version? We are not looking at the firmware version here, we are looking at the Prod ID (Product ID) for the GTMxx unit. The Prod ID would be something like "Prod ID: 1399" (my GTM60) or "Prod ID: 901" (my GTM35). There should be no vx.xx value under "Prod ID:" like v2.10...

I'm just trying to understand the value you're talking about. If you mean v2.10, then your GTM unit was not updated since the update we are discussing is v3.10 & not v2.10.

If your Prod ID is 1399, then you likely did NOT get the update. If your GTM version is 2.10, you did not get updated to this newest v3.10.

I'll bet that your GTM60 was released after mine was and came pre-installed with v2.10. Mine has never been updated since I got it and it remains at v2.00. It came with v2.00 installed.

Garmin has been known to flash a slightly newer firmware on factory releases but not make that version available to the general public via firmware update/download. I'm suspecting that this is the case here.

My 3790/GTM35 got the update, no problem. But have you verified v3.10 on your 3590 (going by the units listed in your sig) with the nuvi connected to the GTMxx and checking under Settings/Device/About? The GTM version will only show here if your nuvi is connected to the GTM.

We know that the update shows as available under WebUpdater and Garmin Express but it is not actually flashed to certain GTMxx units. AFAIK, the unit in question so far is the GTM60/Prod ID 1399. See above for info on how to find the Prod ID. It would help if others posted their GTMxx model along with the Prod ID and verified firmware version. It would help verify which GTM units are actually being updated with v3.10. Note that the nuvi model number is not necessarily helpful in this case since after flashing the GTMxx, the firmware is stored in the GTMxx...the nuvi only displays what version the GTMxx is flashed to.

Example (from my GTM units):

GTM60
Prod ID: 1399
verified firmware after flashing: v2.00

GTM35
Prod ID: 901
verified firmware after flashing: v3.10

Craig,
It appears you GTM36 is a newer unit than the GTM35 that came with my 2460LMT.
I bought my 2460LMT on November 24, 2011, you probably bought yours after that date.
Looks like Garmin failed to include the GTM36 when writing the software.

Here is what I did.
Used WebUpdater and it downloaded the 3.10 firmware to my Nuvi. Connected the 2460 to the car and immediately received message Traffic software is being updated. It then showed a progress bar and next received a message it was installed.
At this point I lost my Traffic and had to reboot.

Once rebooted Traffic Icon reappeared, I then checked the developers screen and ID was 901, then checked about and showed GTM 3.10.

Since it didn't work for you we can assume Garmin neglected to include the GTM36 as being compatible.
I would call them and ask them to fix their oversight.

I'm using the GTM35 for both the 3790 and 2460. The receiver cable that came with the 2460 is a GTM36.

The GTM60 (at least mine with the Product ID of 1399) is also not taking the update. OTOH, my GTM35 took the update just fine. Both of my GTMs (35 & 60) were shown by both WebUpdater and Garmin Express(GE) to have this v3.10 update available yet the update only applied to the GTM35.

The point here is that Garmin is providing this v3.10 update via WebUpdater/GE to GTM units that were not meant to accept the update because of a different Product ID. This is the main cause of confusion. WebUpdater/GE reports one thing while actually checking the GTM's firmware reveals that nothing was updated on certain GTM units.

To further confuse, both WebUpdater & GE report that no further GTM updates are available on the unit that did not even "take" the v3.10 update. Checking the GTM's firmware version clearly shows that no update was performed despite what WebUpdater/GE say.

Since the nuvi 2460 could have come with either a GTM 35 or a GTM 36 traffic receiver, is it possible that WebUpdater and Garmin Express just look to the nuvi model number to decide whether to offer the 3.10 firmware update? They may figure it's better to download the update to all 2460s even though those with the GTM 36 won't install the update to the traffic receiver but that they'd have been able to send the update to all with the GTM 35 receiver where it will be installed.

I wonder now if I were to get a GMT 35 with the older firmware and connect it to my 2460--would the update downloaded to my nuvi still be there to update the 35?

Will this work on Garmin C530 antanee

I was wondering if this update will work on garmin c530?

Working GTM's

I suggest that any other forum members considering to upgrade their Traffic firmware check their model # of your receiver (not Nuvi), it is on the tag pasted to the cigarette lighter portion of the receiver.

If it's a GTM35, it should update sucessfully.
If it's a GTM60 or GTM20, Don't try the download since it won't work and most likely leave two .zip files on your Nuvi that will take up space.

Thank you Garmin for confusing us once more.

Edit: Forgot to mention the GTM25, I don't have one of those, if any other forum members have one please advise if that model was able to upgrade the firmware, kindly include your Nuvi model number.

Yet, both device now show 3.10 when using the GTM35 cable and are working fine. It looks like having a GTM35 receiver is the trick on the 2460.

I wonder if CraigW has the answer here. Back when there was MSN traffic service, WebUpdater used to offer MSN updates on my nuvi 855 even though it never had a GDB series receiver connected to it. I don't recall if it was ever offered an update for a GDB receiver though.

In a way, yes...The update file is named 006B090100.GCD and is meant solely for GTMxx Product ID 006-B0901-00. Note how they match.

The same file 006B090100.GCD was downloaded on both of my nuvi's:

GTM35 (Prod ID 006-B0901-00)
GTM60 (Prod ID 006-B1399-00)

It was only flashed to my GTM35.

In a way, Garmin is in fact updating GarminDevice.xml with the correct updated values for all GTMs, regardless of if the update was actually flashed or not. GarminDevice.xml stores the values that the firmware reports and this is the file that is always polled when running WebUpdater or Garmin Express.

So in a way, you are correct that Garmin is updating ALL GTMs that the update downloaded for...BUT they are doing it in a way that shows an update took place that never was actually flashed to the unit.

In reality, the only GTM units that get the update are those with Prod ID 006-B0901-00 (maybe others that I'm unaware of). It appears that the actual GTM model number has nothing to do with which units are being updated.

It appears they are doing this because different GTM models, even with the same GTM model number have different Product IDs.

I hope I'm making sense here. confused

If it's a GTM60 or GTM20, Don't try the download since it won't work and most likely leave two .zip files on your Nuvi that will take up space.

The GTM35 doesn't work either.

It appears that Garmin is updating the GTM units according to their particular Product ID. As far as I can tell, it appears the GTM model number and what nuvi unit it came with is irrelevant.

Did the download. Looking forward to some improvements. Thank you.

GTM 25

This update doesn't work on GTM 25. Although the update was downloaded to my 1250 once the GTM 25 was plugged in and powered it didn't update.

I have to notice that my 3790 was updated and the GTM 35 that came with it got updated during the first power on.

I would call them and ask them to fix their oversight.

An email was sent to Garmin with the "someone will contact you within three days" reply. I'll report back.

Garmin has made an initial response and it's clear so far that at least the first-line Customer Support folks are unaware of this issue at this time.

Thanks for advising, can you please check your product code on your 1250 with the GTM25 as per DorkusNimrods instructions. The GTM25 must be plugged into your vehicle.

Check using the diagnostics with the unit connected to the GTM:
From the Map screen:
1. Press the Speed field
2. Press the compass heading (ex. NE) for ~7 seconds.
3. Press Developer Info
4. Scroll down to and press Traffic Receiver Status
5. Note the Prod ID value

We know the following product codes:
GTM35 (Prod ID 006-B0901-00)WORKS
GTM36 (Prod ID 006-B1257-00)DOESN'T Work
GTM60 (Prod ID 006-B1399-00)DOESN'T Work
GTM36=?

Another brain fart on my part.
Too late to edit my post, the bottom line should have read GTM25?

However, the post did indicate the GTM36 doesn't work.
