Alleghany,
I linked the new files to the metro page and finally set up this discussion thread. I kind of let that ball drop.

St Louis - things to do for kids

I am a grandparent and when my grandkids come and visit, I always struggle to come up with age appropriate activities and things to do. Wouldn't it be great to have POIs based on age appropriate activities for kids? I know last time the Magic House was a great hit with the three year old, but even knowing the parks with good play equipment is something that likely would be valued but hard to come by for people like me or people driving through. Wouldn't it be great if a parent's group could tackle this one!

I agree

I agree, this would be a great resource to have for parents and grandparents alike. I know that when my family travels it would be nice to know where the local parks are so that if the kids need to run off some energy we are not driving around wasting gas.

List

I am a very low tech person, but would be glad to send a spreadsheet with places and lon/lat - only about a dozen but they are places I have used for my grandkids as well as friends with visiting kids. If I wanted to send that to you, how would I do it? And would I include my comment on the place (if any) as part of the name? Or depend on people to look up their own details?

I'm new here to the site

I'm new here to the site here but I live in the metro-east area and would be glad to help out.

Cool, welcome to the group;)

Alleghany, what do you need this new recruit to help you out with?

Miss POI

St. Louis Metro Area

Well, I just finished (Is a POI file ever finished) the Metro Area Parks file, with about 750 parks, playgrounds, tot lots, etc. Maybe, like okoblaya says, develop a POI of kid-friendly attractions.

okoblaya,
If you send me the 12 or so that you have, I will start a age relevant, kid-friendly, POI of all attractions in the St. Louis area. Send to bluegrassguy@charter.net I live in St. Charles.

I just finished a best of St. Louis list

This is my first POI. It is comprised of mostly restaurants. I used a weekly St.Louis newspaper (Riverfront Times) and City Search as the source of what was considered the best of St.Louis. So far I have listed 110. I tried my best to not include any corporate chains.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/14668

Here is a sample of listings.

Best Outdoor Dining - Terrene
Best Breakfast Courtesy Diner
Best Thai Blue Elephant
Best Dim Sum Wonton King
Best Lunch Counter Spencer's Grill
Best Soul Food Imperial Palace Restaurant
Best Chinese In Soo
Best Sushi Nobu's
Best Korean KoBa
Best Diner Café Manahattan - South
Best Diner Café Manahattan - Clayton
Best Diner Tiffany's Original Diner
Best Cheap Italian Guido's Pizzeria Tappas

Thanks

Fantastic Job!!!!! I have that file linked to the Metro area page now.

New to the site, live in St. Charles county and would like to help out where possible.

Data Files

I have a data file that I have been compiling for another project of the 6,700 places in Missouri that ever had a Post Office.

Any that had zip codes are already geocoded and the rest are being worked (we have guys that collect photos of old POs).

Could you use an eastern Missouri sub-set? wink

Help

Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help with this.

STL Dog parks

I'm new so I'm not quite sure how to pass info from one person to another other than this way. If this isn't right let me know what to do. Anyhow, the "Dog Parks" file seems to be ALL parks.

I have recently done some research on Dog parks in the area. Should I go ahead and make one that only includes those?

Are you doing paid vs. free?

I would hate to drive to one only to find out it is a membership park (like the one at Wilmore park).

I'll figure out a way to

I'll figure out a way to keep them separate. Almost everyone in STL has a fee.

Route 66

I do a Route 66 trip that goes through St. Louis. I can give you the list and go from there. You probably have most of them listed but I'll give them to you. Just need address to send.

Dog Park Additon

Conway Park in Creve Coeur, MO has a off-leash Dog Park. Must pay fee at City Hall for code to get in. (about $15 a year I think).

Conway park

Thanks! I'll add it. If anyone has anymore, just message me directly and I'll get it updated.

St. Louis

If any POI list was needed for St. Louis, it would be The Hill restraunt list and the two Ted Drewes locations.

St Parks

When loading this file to my Garmin GPS using the POI loader, I get the error message "There is a data format error on line 681 of the file ....". The end result is that all POI's after the error are not listed. Am I doing something wrong or is there an error in this file?

Regards

Previous Posting ....

I would appreciate it if someone would let me know if they have a problem with the file or if it is just me. I am relocating to the St Louis area in the very near future and very interested in having this information. Thanks to all for all the efforts and time in creating it.

PM the author

Have you sent a PM to the file author, alleghany, by using the contact tab in his profile? He might see that faster than the post here.

I opened the file and looked at it. There appears to be a formatting problem on the previous line that may be causing entry 681 to fail, but I'm not sure.

Another Best - St. Louis Restaurant

I'm really surprised this one wasn't in your list as they are extremely well-known for the "Best Fried Chicken" in St. Louis even though they have other items on their menu:

Hodak's Restaurant
2100 Gravois
St. Louis, MO 63104
(314) 776-7292
38.60677, -90.21801

Then another one would be for Best Pretzels:
Gus's Pretzel
1820 Arsenal St
St Louis, MO 63118
-90.21697, 38.59683

Both of these are also known to have long lines that go pretty fast.

Thanks!

STL Metro Attractions

Thank You JUNEW22 for pointing out that Hodak's and Gus's Pretzels, two St. Louis Institutions, were missing from the St. Louis Attractions. That oversight has now been rectified.

The Hill

I'm new to St. Louis and this site but a POI of restaurants in The Hill area would be great!

Tom

I second 'The Hill restaurant list'

I will be visiting Saint Louis in June 2010, and will be looking for a place to eat on 'The Hill' in Saint Louis. Since I have not been to Saint Louis in years, I'm guessing that the Italian Restaurant selection and location in Saint Louis has changed?

The Hill

Changes to The Hill happen pretty slowly. If you had a favorite restaurant there 3 years ago, there's a great chance that it's still there. A POI file of popular STL landmarks would be useful. I just drove across the new Stan Span bridge. The maps don't have it yet. It isn't often that a new bridge is built across the river.

Restaurant and bakery

Recommend addition of:

HENDEL’S
