Nuvi 760 - Probelms with Multiple maps

Hi there - I've got an older Garmin GPS... a 760. I originally joined this site back when I got it a number of years ago, downloaded a ton of POI's, loved 'em, used em, and hadn't been back to the site since..

Just this weekend I brought my GPS inside, first time since I uploaded the poi's years ago! And updated the firmware and loaded some new/updated POI's.

I'm also trying to load a number of map images to an SD card.. Topo's mostly but also a mexico and canada map..

I've managed to get two of the maps working at the same time by adding them to the SD card and naming them

gmapsupp and gmapsup1 however if I add a therd, gmapsup2, it doesn't show..If I rename gamapsup2 to gmapsupp it works!... what am I doing wrong..how many maps does the unit support from SD card? Whats the best way to go about getting mutiple maps on the unit?

Maps

The ability to add a 2nd Supplemental map to the nuvi 7x0 series is fairly new (June 2012). I'm pretty sure that before this, only one supplemental map could be on the SD card. For more info, check out DorkusNimrod's thread:

I don't believe a 3rd map can be added to a SD card for your 760 as a separate map image file.

I see two possible solutions:

-the easy one: SD cards are cheap nowadays so if you can figure out which maps are likely to be useful at the same time (or which will likely never be used the same day), simply store maps on different SD cards and label them so you know which to use, then when powered off, insert the one with the Arizona Topo map when you're in the Southwest and the Montana Topo when you're in the Northwest, etc.

-the hard way: using Mapsource (and keeping in mind the file size limitations, map segments limits, etc., etc.), you can create a single gmapsupp.img file containing multiple maps.

A search here or elsewhere on the web should offer more info for you. Here at The Factory, threads about this with input from DorkusNimrod and Motorcycle Mama may be especially helpful. One issue to keep in mind is that messages before mid-2012 will incorrectly state that a SD card can contain just a single supplemental map, although the statements were correct when written. Another issue is that answers are nuvi-series-dependent so an answer for a different nuvi series may not work for your nuvi 7x0 device. And of course, all of this assumes your 760 has the latest firmware update.

Good luck. Keep us posted. And congrats on your first post! wink

Thanks for the reply... I

Thanks for the reply... I actually found a really nice, helpful thread that I think Dorkus originally posted..

Anyway I've got a number of maps loaded..but perhaps I should think about combing the different maps into a single image. What is the file size limit? Are the .img map files limited to a specific size or is it just limited to the 4gb file size limit of fat32?

I've got a 8gb SD, and it would be nice to combine all the maps into two 4gb files so I can load as many as possible. Thoughts?

While we're waiting...

While we're waiting for others to respond about the file size, I believe that there's also a 2025 map segment limit to creating a map for your nuvi. Some map segment info:
