nuvi old jill work ?

will an older version of english american jill work correctly if my nuvi has been recently updated with new software and maps?if so what's the easiest way? i liked american jill on my streetpilot c330 and the same voice was an option to download into my nuvi i bought in july.i did download it because i didn't like any of the three american voices that came preinstalled.after updating my unit i don't like the new jill.

Did you keep a full backup

Did you keep a full backup of your unit before you upgraded?

old jill

did not have a backup of the nuvi.didn't know how to do that till yesterday! the new jill voice tone isn't quit as clear, sounds like in a barrel sometimes.i have old jill on my streetpilot c330 and i also have an .exe tts file of old jill that i found online on garmin's website that i downloaded to save.can i use either of them?if so can i just drag the new jill out and copy and paste the old jill from my cpu file to the open nuvi folder on my cpu?last question ! if i ccan do the above and get back old jill is the best thing to do with future updates is to remove the file of old jill,do the up date and then reinstall old jill?

It

It is very unlikely that a voice file from a c330 will be compatible with your Nuvi.

You'll have to do something with the Jill.exe file before you put it on the Nuvi as the voice files used are in vpm format, not exe. Once you have a .vpm file, you can just copy it from where ever you have it saved to the Voice folder on the Nuvi, after you delete the Jill file that's on the Nuvi now. Don't do any of this without a full backup of your Nuvi however.

You can always delete the Jill file from the Nuvi and then use Garmin's Webupdater software to place the most current version of Jill back on the device. Normal firmware or map updates will not alter or delete any voice file. You have full control over what voice files are on your GPS and when to install voice file updates.

old jill.

i do have an exe but i'm going to delete it.i also have a link to garmins software page were i can get a download for american jill (tts) software ver 1.90 as of jan 2 2008 which is 13.56 mb. will this work? http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1007#...

Yes It Should Work

The link you provided is an .exe file that you will have to run to install the Jill voice to your Nuvi.

My 660 (old) and my 2460 both have the same Jill V3.10 loaded since they use the same compression format. The 13.5 MB file from 2008 sounds about right in size. I have a Jill voice from Dec 2010 that is 14,442 KB in size.

Copy the existing Jill file from your Voice folder to your PC as a backup, once done delete the Jill file from your Nuvi.

Next download the .exe file from the link, connect your Nuvi to the PC, once Windows recognizes you can double click on the .exe file and it should transfer the Jill 1.90 voice file to your Nuvi. If something goes wrong, you can always use your backup or WebUpdater to install the Jill3.10 file back to your Nuvi as member t923347 indicated.

Personally I would not use such an old file since that is why they provide updates, to fix bugs in older versions. You may have a more acceptable voice to your liking, but may be sacraficing other problems the older voice had.

old jill

i think your right!also evertime i up date the gps it would update the voice too?best to update everything and not do the fussing with it.if i increased the default volume of american jill would an update set the default volume back too? it's a shame that garmin doesn't do a better job with voice quality and offer more english voice options.do the more expensive garmins have better voice ,software, and firmware features?

Volume Not Set By The Voice

Updating voices does not change the volume, that is done in your volume settings and should not change with a voice update.

If you don't like American Jill, why not try British Emily or Austalian Karen, maybe they would suit you better.

Turbo's TTS Voice Editor does allow you to change both the volume and speed of the voice. That's what was being used according to the OP.

Jill 3.10

My 14xx models could be updated to 3.10. I was happy with Jill 2.90, so i have that version on both of my 14xx models.
Jill 3.00 did not work for me at all.

Pardon me if I did, I may have missed something in the mkd's posts,
The only thing I read related was " i increased the default volume of american jill would an update set the default volume back too?". True that can be accomplished with the Voice Editor, but I interpreted it as the device's volume.
I didn't see anything mentiong TurboCCC's Voice Editor being used.

If mkd is familiar with TTS Voice Editor then he can use it on Jill V3.10 that WebUpdater downloaded and is present on his Nuvi. Maybe he can change the volume and speed settings that would make it more to his liking.

Jill V3.0 did not work for ANYONE using TurboCCC's voice editor, Garmin changed something, it displayed garbled characters that Voice Editor was unable to read.
Version 3.10 corrected that and Voice Editor now works again.
I had no problem with V 3.0, only the fact that I couldn't use the TTS Voice Editor.

mea culpa

Just reread the thread and assumed (silly me) when he spoke of TTS EXE file we was referring to the editor.

Thought I was having another senior moment with the accompanying brain farts. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.
