Which Garmin for the New Year?

After returning two new Tom Tom 1650's to Costco because of flickering, random resetting, jumping from page to page and very, very late turn announcements, I am wondering which Garmin to get. I liked the 6 in screen on the Tom Tom but Garmin's biggest is still at 5 in. I had two Garmin's before the new Tom Toms; both died after I replaced batteries in them and screen size was not really the issue anyway but Garmin is more expensive at 5 inches than Tom Tom at 6 in.

I like LM but don't really use the Traffic Updates at all. A jack out to use with a headset would be nice since I use it on my motorcycle as well but I don't think they even make that model anymore since Bluetooth.

7" Garmin

Actually Garmin does sell one unit larger than 5 inches ... the 7 inch dezl 760. It is designed for truckers, but could be used for general auto navigation.

Take A Look at the Montana

I've had it since July, to supersede a Garmin GPSMAP60CSx.

The Montana is a very nice device, good screen size with plenty of features.

The powered mount is great. Just snap the Montana in or out.

If

If your in anyway concerned about the price of a new Garmin GPS, the Montana may not be your best choice. At $550 to $700 (Garmin pricing) plus the cost of City Navigator maps, the Montana'a are wonderful units but don't come cheap.

Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

Less Is More?

As I have said before, the GPSMAP60CSx and Montana may not be cheap, I have had only two GPS devices in the last six years or so.

You have 6 GPS devices in your signature. That has to be more expensive than the route I have taken, which is to get a good device that will last a very long time. The 60CSx is a legacy device, and the Montana is impressive.

I see many people owning multiple GPS devices, and that ends up being more expensive than if they just had the one so-called expensive Montana. The people that have many GPS devices end up spending more on all their GPS devices than I have on the Montana.

Why Multiple Devices?

t923347 may have several people in his family that use the various devices, owning only one could cause a hardship.

I do agree with you that a quality unit is better then several inferior products. But we must consider that the Montana has features that many people will never use so there is no need to pay a premium price.

I myself have two, the wife uses one (Nuvi 660).
When we take a long trip I always bring two since if something fails I have a backup.

I still love my 660, not complicated, and always reliable. The unit is 5 years old, still has the original battery that holds a long charge and has never given me any problems. It does what its supposed to do, get me from point A to point B.

Montana Has Audio Out Jack

The Montana has an audio out jack, so you can use the audio features on your motorcycle.

nüvi 760

I still use a nüvi 760. I had one and lost it. I bought a replacement. A little while back I bought another one as a backup unit "just in case". I love the thing. It plays .mp3 files and also has the audible player for audio books from audible.com. I got my backup on eBay for a very reasonable price and I'm glad I did. The unit I was using finally developed a problem with the audio-out jack and now I can ONLY get audio from either that output or the FM transmitter. No internal speaker sounds at all. I simply switched to my backup unit and all is well. For my usage this was (and still is) the best dang Garmin unit ever.

Nuvi 3490

Personally, I think when the 3490 is under $200, I might upgrade from my old 750.

nüvi 765T

I still use a nüvi 765T that I purchased in March 2010. The battery is going now so I will be replacing it this year. I paid $79 for lifetime maps for the unit so I will be using it until I feel I have gotten my monies worth!

Have a go at replacing the battery as shown in the video linked below. I replaced battery in my 1490 when it started to get weak and it's as good as new now.

Aardvark, pardon my presumption, I just noticed you are an old hand around here and certainly know about battery replacements. I'll leave my link in case it may help others.

765t is a great model

I love my 765t also. I will probably be changing my battery soon as I want it to last as long as possible. The unit is great but the accessories not so much - 2 cradles and 1 cable that went bad and had to be replaced.

Nuvi 1450LM if you can still find one ...

I subscribe to the less is more school:

Nuvi 1450 LMT (if you can find one)
ETrex 30(w/GPS+GLONASS+GPSFiledepot maps) (if you can use a handheld)
