What "file" are you asking about?

I you are talking about the number of POI's that are listed when you select a POI group or do a search the units only show the closest 50 or so to your present set location and not the entire listing of all available.

When I download a POI (ex: Wal-Mart) which contains 300 lines, in my GPS I see only 54 max.

I believe this is by design. Surely you don't expect the unit to list ALL locations in a giant list. What is shown is a list of ~50 of the closest POIs to your position, radially away from you. When your position changes, the list changes to reflect that.

You can manually change the position of your GPS to find other POIs that are further away from your current position:

Touch Tools
Touch Settings
Touch System
Touch the box under or adjacent to GPS Simulator
Select On and touch OK
Touch and hold the back button to return to the main menu
Touch View Map
Touch the map
Drag your finger across the screen to move the map
Touch the map and an arrow appears
Touch Set Location once the desired location has been found

Once the new position is set, you will be able to view the mapping and search for POIs in that area.
