Florida Trailheads

I've just uploaded a first draft of a Florida Trailheads POI file. (It should show up in a couple of days after the administrator decide that it's OK.) Right now it's primarily a Central Florida database.

However, I'd like to grow it to cover the entire state. But it will take a while.

In the meantime, if you've got any trailheads in Florida, please send me the GPX file and I'll add it to the POI file.

Thanks,

Thanks for msking this POI.

Thanks for msking this POI. My family enjoys hiking and we will get great use out of it.

some comments

First off, welcome to the site and the creation of your first POI file.

As you are using the GPX file format for your list, I have some suggestions that would be seen as useful add-ins.

I noticed your file (it is up by the way) lists only the trail name and the coordinates of the start. I would think about adding some extra elements such as an approximate street address, the city and state. I would also think about adding more information about the trail, such as is it paved, the difficulty and the length if those items are available. This would help all those that would like to try one. Other items that could be included in the description is if bicycles use the trail and what parking is either at the trail entrance or nearby.

Overall, it's a great start.

One final item, remove your email from the file listing. It will help stop some spam. People can add additional locations either by adding them to this topic or, by sending a private message by clicking on our user name.

Thanks for the comments

I've removed my email address, although with the amount of spam I already get, I'm not sure I'd notice any additional.

I haven't hiked most of the trails (yet), so I wouldn't be able to add much to them. But the idea of paved and unpaved seems to be a good one. I'll see what I can do.

I'm using BaseCamp to generate my file. What would be the best way of indicating whether the trail is paved or unpaved? Or are you suggesting I just add it to the title?

There's a wealth of information on this site about a program written by one of the members who has sadly gone silent. TurboCCC has a program called Extra_POI_Editor, or EPE for short. The program is extremely powerful but fairly easy to use. I would look into installing it. There are some FAQs about setting it up, if you can't find them easily, drop me a note and I'll send the one I wrote.

EPE will allow you to access all the fields using a spreadsheet as the input medium. I'm more than happy to assist you in setting up both a master spreadsheet and EPE. The only caveat is it's a Windows only package.
