3790Lmt Dislikes

1). Ecoroute? No idea what it’s good for. Had my unit for over a year now. Spent a lot of time watching the feather go from red to green to red to green…lol and filling out the price per gallon. Btw if you own the ecoroute hd attachment and the echoroute doesn’t work…that’s why. The attachment also is a waste of time for Diesel owners like me, cause there’s no more gauges on it than I already have.

2). Pedestrian and Bicycle mode: What can you do in 10minutes? That’s about all you got for the Battery life. It’s an Automotive Gps not a “On the Trail”

3). Points of Interest: This is a tuff one. It doesn’t work quite right. I’ve played with this for hours to find work arounds. For some reason it doesn’t like little Towns. You can go in and spell the city and then search for anything in that town and it will not come up with anything. As an example. I’m sitting in my Camp site by a lake called Leighton Lake. The nearest town is 20 minutes away, Logan Lake population 2300. There are two Gas stations there, bin there for at least 30 years. Ones a Petro used to be Shell and ones an Esso. No way it will find them. It will find Gas stations in a city called Kamloops population 85000+ 1hour away. Now remember, I went in and spelled the city even spelled the gas stations. Tried it all. There’s a hospital there, also a bank. Doesn’t find anything. It does recognize the Town.

There it is. My dislikes.

Do you mean this station? Esso: COPPER VALLEY GROCERY & GAS ,18 PONDEROSA ST,LOGAN LAKE, BC V0K 1W0,250-523-6420

It's in the ESSO file.

That's really not my point. I know it's there. Not every person buying a gps knows about poi files. Maybe i should have used a different example. We don't have a Hospital poi file. There is one in Logan Lake very small mind you. 3790 can't find it. Important? I would say so. So what this thing will make you do is travel 1 hour although there is one 20 minutes away. Under normal circumstances we don't really need our units at home because we know, for example where the closest Hospital is.

The Ecoroute function (not the OBDII device), is ok for calculating fuel costs for a destination if you get your mileage dialed in. It's not exact for obvious reasons, but close enough.

After reading the post, I turned on the 3790 and let it operate on battery. After 1:45, the low battery warning chirped. It's almost at 2 hours now. Not bad at all for being on with 50% brightness.

Factory POI's. Ah, well those have always been hit-and-miss for listings, and have been for years. I use them only if I'm stuck looking for a service. They are seriously incomplete.

Take it for a walk. Use the trip planner down to timmy's, then tell me how much time you get.

I got 1 hour and 35 minutes on the battery the other day on 3790

I had an unplanned need the other day and used my 3790LMT in a vehicle to navigate a two part trip planner route and did not have the power cord with me. The first leg of the trip took about 55 minutes and the next leg took about 40 minutes and did not get a warning until near the end of the second part at 1 hour and 35 minutes on the battery,

I've never gotten any unplugged battery life from this thing from day 1. Good to know, might have to see about replacing it.

Edit: Just did a quick look for a new Battery. Gps City says from two different tech support guys that The 3790T does not have a user replaceable battery.
A lot these guys know...lol

town database and the built in POI's are part of the map

The built in POI's are part of the map download and are the same for every Garmin that is running that map version and have nothing to do with just the 3790. No Garmin model is going to find them if they were not included with the map download version.

I have owned a number of top of the line Garmin units and the 3790LMT is heads and shoulders way better than any of the others I have owned.

The built in Nav unit in my vette has a built in POI database about 2-3 times the number that are in my Garmins. I find it is far more comprehensive and current than my Garmin and that is good because you can not add custom POI's to supplement it.

Those are not the only guys. YouTube even shows you how to do it, same guys I think.

I think i'll wait for a bit. Maybe see what Garmin does as far as new models are concerned next year.

3790 Battery

You can get a 3790 battery on eBay for as low as 13.95 delivered.

Yep

I could do that or wait till Garmin brings out some new units. I was toying with the 3590 if the new traffic cable that Garmin said i needed wouldn't fix my problem. But it fixed it. So that was 85 bucks shipped. I really don't use the pedestrian/bicycle function. I also don't like spending money on repairs.
The 3790LMT is pretty cheap now. Rather buy a new one if need be.

Out of curiosity I fired up my TomTom GO 720, which hasn't had a map update in almost two years, and set my current location to Logan Lake, BC (which it recognized, BTW). I hit...

[Main menu] > Help Me! > Drive to help > Nearest hospital

...and my choices were:

300 m   Logan lake health ctr
34.4 km   Cinnamon lodge
37.6 km   Overlander extended care hosp
37.8 km   Kamloops urgent clinic

I also did...

[Main menu] > Navigate to... > Point of Interest > POI near you > Gas station

... and I got:

55 m   Logan lake gas
425 m   Copper valley grocery & gas
35.2 km   Aberdeen chevron

Just sayin'.... wink

WELL!!!

No idea what to say, that blows me away. I just tried again and got the city but nothing else.
