GPSr for my mom

Hi everyone,

My mom (72 years old and not tech savy) is saying she would like to get a GPS for her car. It doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles but I figure the key items are large screen and I'm thinking bluetooth would be nice along with voice activated navigation. She already has a standalone Motorola bluetooth for her car, so if the GPS has it, it could also replace the Motorola.

I'm thinking the Nuvi 2595LMT (traffic isn't necessary) but if anyone else has other thoughts, I'm open for advice. The biggest thing is ease of use.

Thanks.

to begin with

I would take the unit I'm currently using and see if she could operate it, and if so, how did she use it.

Chances are she doesn't need anything more than a 50LM as she already has a bluetooth she knows how to operate and is comfortable with. Voice recognition/command would probably be a level of complexity she wouldn't want or use.

age is just a number

How can anyone offer suggestions without knowing your mother, there are many here in this forum much older than her that are comfortable operating the most complex GPS receivers in the market and may take umbrage with the suggestion the only thing a 72 year old can operate is a Garmin 50.

I Agree - Run a Test

I agree that this would provide a useful basis for decision - from several standpoints.

First, you can find out if the user interface works well for her.

Second, you can see if the screen is big enough for her. By chance, I am also 72, and for me the *smallest* device that is at all comfortable has a 5 inch screen. That is a personal choice, and she may be happy with a smaller screen, or may want a larger screen.

If it turns out that she desires a larger screen, you may want to look at the TomTom Via 1605. This has a 6 inch screen and a faster processor than the smaller TT units, plus Bluetooth connectivity that gives you hands-off phone capability. It does NOT have LIVE connectivity that gives you HD Traffic, and at this time there is not a TT model with this screen size that does have LIVE.

It also has the capability of letting the user set up a "QuickMenu" where up to six frequently used functions can be called up by a single button press. This can be a convenient way for another person to set up the phone for use by a "non-tech" user. (This is also available on smaller-screen TT models, FWIW.)

With best wishes,
- Tom -

The 1605 is a great unit ...

I think your mom would really like it ... We love ours (just bought my GF one as she liked the one in my pickup so much and her 540 got nicked).

"You can't get there from here"

Thanks everyone

Thanks for the input, everyone. I settled on a refurbished 2460LMT. Best Buy has a 1-day sale for $139.99. It's an online only deal so I should have it some time next week.
