Transfering Waypoints to new NUVI

My Nuvi 350 screen cracked.

Got a new Nuvi 1450.

Loaded the *.gpx file with the old waypoints into BaseCamp and somehow loaded those into the 1450.

BUT - none of the waypoint symbols appeared in BaseCamp or the 1450.

How do I:
delete all the waypoints now in BaseCamp and the 1450.

then, get my waypoints with symbols into the 1450.

Thanks
Joel

First - BACKUP

If you have not already done so, then the first thing we all want you to do is to backup your new 1450.

If you do not have a user manual, get one at http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual.jsp.

Both of your units speak of "Favorites" instead of "waypoints". When you use a program like BaseCamp to transfer "waypoints" to your device, the device puts them into Favorites.

On your devices, Favorites are held in internal memory but are written to a file each time the unit is powered up or a new favorite is "saved". This file is "[Garmin device]:\Garmin\GPX\current.gpx".

On your 1450, to delete the Favorites, it should be something like
Tools > [down arrow] > My Data > Delete Favorites > Select All

Look at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/36164 for info on backing up and/or transferring favorites from device to device.

I do not use map symbols with my favorites so I cannot say with certainty that a transfer of the current.gpx file from one unit to another will keep them, but I suspect that will be the case.

Please let us know how you progress.

First - BACKUP

Thank you jgermann,

1. Backup - didn't do that. I assume that means copy the current.gpx somewhere. Since I got it yesterday, nothing to save.

2. Downloaded, saved and skimmed the manual.

3. Following the instructions I saved the Nuvi 350 current.gpx as current1.gpx on the new 1450. The map symbols show up in BaseCamp but not on the device.

Thank you again for the jump start.

Many of us are rabid about backup - too many times the unexpected happens to members and backups are the only way back to normalcy. To learn how to do a nuvi backup, look at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394

I am assuming that you now have all of the favorites from the 350 on the new 1450.

I was surprised to learn that the favorites map symbols did not show up, but I made an assumption that you set those symbols using an edit of favorites (see page 12 of the 1450 manual - your 350 would have been similar). Were the symbols in question set by a nuvi edit or did they come from Basecamp?

I am learning here because I have not used map symbols. I will do some testing to check them out.

Thanks again. Did the backup

Thanks again.

Did the backup - nice writeup.

Yesterday was the first time I really tried to come to gripes with BaseCamp.

Most of my map symbols were created with Map Source. A few on the Nuvi.

Loaded custom POIs and found them on the Nuvi.

The learning continues.
