My LMT 1490

Greetings Fellow Members;I have tried not to create a motion about water under the bridge, but hopefully we could cure or live with this minor bump.
My Lmt 1490 insists on calling my home street as "ROAD".It refuses to tell me what street I am on.Actually at the beginning of a turn it shows the name of the street.Well, the street is very long, and 15 seconds later the name has vanished. It could have at least show the name in bold letters below the screen box.It shows above the name of your next turn or destination.I must always remember the road im travellling on.Maybe I could get a commentary from all the think tanks.

Destination?

Are you navigating a route (have an explicit destination set)? Or are you just navigating in map display mode? If you are navigating to a set destination, the top bar will show the next turn. If you are navigating in map display mode, it should show the street you are on.

Some of the older nuvi models showed the next upcoming cross street in map display mode. Garmin changed this behavior in the 7x5 and 1xxx series to show the street you are on. Owners that were used to the old method complained loudly. I think Garmin has gone back to displaying the cross street on some new models and we how read complaints about that.

It is too bad that Garmin does not make this a preference setting.

Sounds

Sounds like the map data only has the street name for a certain portion of the whole street. I've seen this happen on all my Nuvi's in certain areas. For example John Street is 20 blocks long but the map data only knows the street name for the first 10 blocks and then will show ROAD for the remaining 10 blocks. ROAD seems to be the default street name when the actual street name isn't known, whether being displayed in the green bar across the top of the map screen or spoken as a turn instruction (turn left on to road).

My LMT 1490

Thanks Allan for the reply. Yes I always have my nuvi 1490 on detination routes and never just navigate simulating travel as i go with it each day.As soon as the turn white arrow shows on corner it clearly shows only Farm to Market Rd numbers on the magneta. All upcoming cross streets are stated, but never the road you are on.It clearly states the Road you are supposed to turn on above the screen.I always forget the road i am on due to length, and have to look sideways for the name.

My 1490 LMT

Hi everything you have stated is the honest truth about it. My street is 6 miles long and splits into 2 names with a main cross road. Ok so i begin 3 miles up into my home split street. It knows my destination because it clearly shows the destination flag. Why does it not know the cross into name home road.

Because

Because Navteq (the map supplier) doesn't know the name of the street. If you want your maps to know the street name that it now calls ROAD send the correction to Navteq, using their MapReporter function:

http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-external/secured/submi...

They will check it out and it will be corrected on some future map update. Probably take at least a year however, unless someone else has already reported.
