Nuvi 750 failing need help nuvi 3550lm

My nuvi 750 is not working correctly. After start up you can only touch the sceen about 3 or 4 times and it locks up. No more touches of the screen do anything. Unplug and no stay on/turn off message comes up, just shuts off. I did get it to find a location but as soon as "jill" told me where to go that's all just froze. Any ideas?

Looking at replacing it with nuvi 3550 LM. I have no need for or do i want traffic. The 1390? or what ever model It is I have in my work truck with traffic is aggravating, the stupid ads drive me crazy, wish I didn't get the traffic version when I bought that one.

It's worth a try

Start by doing a hard reset http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136
and then a screen recalibration http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31900 and see if it helps any.

This Should Fix It

Before doing this you might want to copy your file from the GPS:

I think the file is in Garmin\GPX\Current.GPX - copy thie to your pc and call it OldCurrent.GPX (exact name isn't important)

Then do the hard reset.
Then do the screen recalibrate
Then copy the file OldCurrent.GPX from your PC to the GPS.
Finally - then turn your GPS all of the way off. Then start the GPS up again - giving it more time to set and read all of the files.

This could / should return your GPS to working order, with all of your old favorites intact. I have done this many times with success every time.

Good thoughts. It'd also be worth checking the firmware version on the OP's 750, then decide if WebUpdater should be used to update the GPS. The 750 has had at least a couple of firmware versions that were offered, then removed by Garmin due to problems with it.

Thanks for the info. When I

Thanks for the info. When I get back home and have a pc that I can download the updates I'll try that. What a time for "jill" to go on vacation. I'm supposed to be on vacation. If I knew she was going to do this, I'd have brought city maps with me & not just the USA atlas that's always in the car. Oh well.

Rid Yourself Of Aggravation

When you get back home you can also eliminate your aggravation with the Traffuc ads.

First connect that GPS to your computer and delete the cached traffic ads, I assure you it's safe to do since when Traffic is activated they will recreate themselves like a bad dream that won't go away.

Instructions:
Find and delete RDS_LBA.ddb file from your unit.

In 1000 series and up such as 1490T it is in
\.system\DDB\RDS_LBA.ddb
Otherwise it is in
\Garmin\POI\DDB\RDS_LBA.ddb

Next go into your settings under avoidances and UNCHECK Traffic, this will disable the traffic function and prevent the cached advertisement from appearing again.

Firmware update?

Did you perhaps just update the maps and automagically get a firmware update? The last time I let Garmin update the firmware on my 760 I had the same sort of problems. A hard reset fixed it until I could roll back to a previous (stable) firmware version.

No map or fimware updates

No map or fimware updates were done.
I got home and hooked up to the computer and updated the screen software and that has done it. Back to working. Thanks to all who helped.

Just out of curiosity ...

what is "screen software" for a nuvi?
