Hi, I'm a 40 minute train

Hi,

I'm a 40 minute train ride heading south to Grand Central so add me to NYC Metro list. The NYC metro is huge ranging from Central Jersey, half way to Albany and over into CT. I suspect we'll have lots of maintainers.

Metro Area

With regard to the ‘Metro Area Project’, I think guidelines are needed to establish just how wide of an area a 'Metro Area' will encompass.

While going through the New York, NY - Top Attractions file I came across the Baseball Hall of Fame which is located in Cooperstown, NY. This location is over 200 miles and 4 hours away from NYC. While this would make a perfect entry for a 'State of NY - Top Attractions' POI I think it's too far away from the city to be considered a 'New York Metro Area' attraction! smile

Good point Mike...I was thinking about asking for a metro area project for the "metro" area I live in, about smack dab between Minneapolis MN & Des Moines, IA... smile

Will Do

I looked at your POI and it looks great. You covered quite a lot of interesting points especially the Shore Parkway/narrows seawall. There is also a big lovers lane there in the parking lot off the Belt P,kay. My old boss Lt. Borelli nailed Son of Sam David Bekerwitz (not sure of the spelling as I think it happened in 1977 or 1978.The cop who put a summons on his parked car were he left it traced him back to the Bronx were he lived. The cop was promoted to 3rd grade Detective and my boss Borelli was promoted to the Detective division after nailing him and later was promoted to Capt by passing the civil service captains test. Talk about memories I.ll try to get Yankee Stadium theMerchant Marine Academy under the Throgs neck bridge, and a few other places. Now for the dumb question, How do I get them to you? E-Mail. I live in southeastern Virginia now and between traveling back and fourth to New York to see my sons I don,t get to use this board as much as I would like to. It,s Great talking to a fellow New Yorker.

--
Richie

Thanks Rich...

...it was a lot of fun! As for getting those locations to me, why don't you become part of the Metro NY team? You're familiar with the area even though you don't live here anymore, you might even know of an 'exotic' place or two. Just notify Miss POI if you can help.

I remember 'Son of Sam', scared the crap out of us living in Brooklyn back then. Good police work put an end to the carnage! I'm sure you've got some good ones you can tell Rich. smile

A friend of mine was in HWY 2 and they used to have to check vehicles illegally parked on the grass by the seawall. Caught many an embarrassed couple in compromising positions if you know what I mean! wink

Hope the Mrs. is doing well!

Good Job with Staten Island

Just downloaded/uploaded the Staten Island file into my TTOne. Alan, you did a great job with the file! smile

Brooklyn's and Staten Island's attractions are done!

Remember, if you're coming in to the city from the south and the west then you most likely will pass through Staten Island (Goethals Bridge or Outerbridge Crossing) and then Brooklyn (Verrazano Bridge). So load those POI's and take in the sights before you hit in the Big Apple! wink

Jump In RhythmTip

Brooklyn and Staten Island are established, however, the Bronx and Queens haven't been started as of yet; the City isn't complete either. Feel free to jump in!

If you know of a place that's off the beaten path, or only you're familiar with include it. Same goes for Brooklyn and Staten Island, those files will be updated as new places are mentioned.

The city never sleeps!smile

This is great, but the thing is I made separate files with POIs for different kinds of transportation. For example I have a file (which I want to move here) with the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, Port Authority Trans Hudson(PATH), All ferry stops in NJ and NYC, etc.

My plan is to put together all kinds of different options for commuters in NYC area. Like for example Park-And-Ride stops, local train stops for NJ Transit, Amtrak, etc.

How do we organized this?

Best regards!

Go ahead and upload these locations to the site and I will add them to the metro area;) We can provide a POI Package that has transportation as a heading and then you open it and find the seperate files.

Miss Poi

I'm back...

Hi all,

I'm back. I wasn't here for a few weeks. Neither in the area nor in the 'net.

I see there are some changes. Where is my Transportation section in NYC Metro? I just created 2 files, ready to be uploaded.

Ms. Poi, can you create this section again. I'll keep it hot.

Thanks!

Miss Poi

Miss POI, I uploaded 2 files yesterday and tried today with one of them as both GPX and CSV. When I click submit the message seems to be getting through, but it is not, because when I go to check my posted messages they are not there.

Can you, please check what is going on?
Thanks in advance!

it has already been done;)
I linked them to the NY Metro area. In order for them to be included into the transportation file they would have to be manually input one at a time.

Jon is building a new system right now that will allow us to dump files like this together into the database.
Once we get the new system, we can start making roll up files.

Miss Poi

Sounds great! I don't think I need to add the POIs by hand because without the order of grouping them in files or "containers" of some kind it will become a mess.

Thanks!

Transportation project...

Hi folks,

I know some of you have seen or even downloaded some of the files I have created.

My goal is to make POI files of so called remote commute options. These are related to connections between the NYC MTA and NJ Transit transportation hubs.

I would like to invite you guys to participate into this project with whatever you can, if you are willing to help. Also proposals and critics are welcome. The goal is to create files, useful for the majority of the GPS users in the region and also the guests, which will be using the public transportation.

Here is a list of files, which I created:

Here is a list of things I can think of to add to the Transportation project:

  • Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) stops
  • Metro North stops
  • Park&Ride in NY (Metro North)
  • Park&Ride in NJ (NJ Transit Stops (I'm currently working on this)
  • Newark Light Rail
  • AirTrain EWR and JFK airports

Let me know if I missed something. I will be glad if we can get this done soon.

The New York subway and buss system we don't have to include, since they are in the cyty and they are well documented with their connections and stops in the MTA maps. Not only that, but the number of stops is huge... Maybe it is useful to include only the connections.

NY area

What about the coney Iland area near the beach.

LIRR

I see a couple of people mentioned it, but it doesn't look like anyone has uploaded a file with LIRR stations. I'm working on that now - I have the info compiled, I want to check it - and use my GPS to find some stations as I'm driving around the next few days - before I upload.

Current NY Filming locations

My son works on movie & TV sets in Manhattan, Brooklyn, LI, etc. He has done quite a few movies as well as TV series such as Gossip Girl, White Collar, 30 Rock, Bored to Death, etc.
There is a lot of commotion with all the fans & paparazzi & bystanders.

How about a POI file listing where in the NY metro area there are film projects.

This would be a very dynamic POI project, changing weekly sometimes daily. I don't know how to keep this current. Some possible sources for obtaining future film locations:

1) NYC film permit department
2) Film equipment rental records
3) Personnel agencies for extras
4) POI users stumbling on a set (via text message, emails.)
5) An insider (Unions??)

There are probably many other ways to get the film locations. This was just off the top of my head.

NYPD - web links to locations

I have three (3) .pdf documents that have the web-hyperlinks to NYPD: Patrol - Transit - Housing Precincts that may assist in adding locations to the NYPD file.
Who can I send them to and how ?
