Wow!

Thanks, that's a good 2-3 day before I expected to see it. I'll guess I'll update my 855 now as well as the 750 that's about 75% complete.

I got the large one

You made me check. My 855 still got the <50MB jcv so I needed to download and manually install the large one. The new map and new large jcv are simulating a route now and all looks well.

Thanks to all for the info.

You can delete the originally installed jcv file if you want to -- please say that you've made a complete backup of your nuvi to a hard drive or recordable DVD first smile

Another option is to keep the original jcv file on the nuvi but rename it to something like

DXXXXXXXXXXX.JCV.disabled

so that it won't be used. Then install the large jcv file to the SD card in the proper directory to be seen. I expect you need to create a /garmin/jcv folder on the SD card and place the large jcv file there to be seen...unless the 1490T uses a different structure than my older nuvi 855.

Out of curiosity, what size is the default jcv file for the 1490T with the new 2013.20 map?

Does the 1490T do full-screen or split-screen Junction Views? Remember that this large jcv file is the file for full-screen JV displays.

1490 question

My question. Is there a split-screen JCV file for my 1490t?

2013.20 downloaded nicely using the SD card and saving to the computer. The JCV file, D3153070A, was only 43MB. My local exits are missing. The exits in Peoria are there but are NOT split screen.
I downloaded D3060070A to my SD card. All the views are back, but not split screen.

I prefer the full screen, myself. Split screen is too small for a 4.3" screen, and too distracting while driving.

Large JCV file

I don't want to sound stupid, but maybe I am.

I have a Nuvi 855 and a Nuvi 3790.

What exactly is the advantage/disadvantage of the smaller vs the larger JCV file.

On my 855 the existing file is 43MB.

And please elaborate, meaning split screen or large screen.

Just looked at my 3790 and the JCV file is 460,009 kb

Does this indicate I should use the larger file version then?
Thanks

On your 855, you should download and use the 756 MB file referenced by t923347 in the first post of this thread. This will give you the most coverage (more intersections with views) and also more realistic images than the small file that downloaded on your 855 with the map update. Note that you may need to put this large JCV file on a SD card, as there may not be room for it in the internal storage of your 855.

The file you downloaded on your 3790 also has complete converage with photo realistic images, but it is for units with split screen junction views. Your 855 has full screen junction views. You should not copy the JCV file from your 3790 to your 855.

The one he needs for his 3790 is D3191060A.JCV. This is the 449 MB split-screen file.

Not true, altogether. If they want the full screen version, t923347 is correct. It works very well on the 3790.

IMO, the split screen is crap, and hard to see.

I like

I like the split screen view because it stays on the screen until your into the exit that the view is displaying. With the full screen view it disappears long before the exit so you can see the map screen again.

I now understand what people were explaining about full and split screen. Thanks for that.

I installed the larger file directly to my 3790 and the larger file to my 855 on a SD card.
Then yesterday I took a 60 mile drive with both GPS's in the car. On the way to my location I had bot set up to follow a set route and everything worked fine.

Then on my way home I set the 855 for HOME and let the 3790 just show me the map and where I was driving. Several times the 3790 just went to a far out zoomed map and it showed me somewhere I was not.
Meanwhile the 855 just trucked happily along without a hiccup.

When I got back home I removed the larger JCV file and renamed the 459MB file to its original, hoping that that larger file may have been causing me problems.

I'm not sure I understand your post entirely but if you were expecting to see junction views on the 3790 with no destination inputted then your out of luck. Junction Views will only appear if you have entered a destination on your Nuvi.

As has been noted there is little reason to place the downloaded 700+ JCV file on your 3790. Both that file and the 459MB file that was already there are EXACTLY the same file with the same number of views. The only difference is that the 700+ MB file are all full screen views while the 459MB file is split screen views (small pictures = smaller file size).

I am

Yes I know the junction views only show when I am set up on a route to somewhere and on a highway which actually has these junctions.

What I said is the the 855 was set to take me home to follow a route and the 3790 was just on MAP view.

While on MAP view it would always show me exactly where I am. This time it zoomed out on several occasions and the Map actually showed me something very different from a second before, not even where I then was. I actually had to hit the return arrow to get it back to normal.

Never ever had that happen before on a 350 I had owned, the 855 and even the 3790 until last night. BTW both GPS's have the new 2013.20 map installed.

I don't think

that problem was related to the JCV file or the map ... sounds to me more like a temporary loss or weakening of the satellite signal, or maybe the autozoom went wonky (not unheard of on a Garmin).

Full vs Split-Screen JCV

According to Juggernaut, devices like the 3790 support both full-screen and split-screen files. Is this true for the 3760 as well?

Having never had a Garmin with full-screen JCV, I like the split-screen as it's a nice transition for me. How long does the full-screen exit view stay on the screen for? Approximately how far from the exit does it appear and then disappear?

855

imgrund wrote:

My nuvi 855 uses the full-screen JV and can't use split-screen.

My guess is that the photo-realistic JV pops up and stays on my 855 for around 5 seconds before reverting to the map--long enough to get a good view. This is not a big issue for ordinary exit ramps. But for complex interchanges involving multiple rapid ramp changes, this several-second JV can become an issue.

I'm not going to go out and buy a new nuvi with split screen, but when my 855 fails and I need to replace it with a new model, the split screen JV/map view will be a real plus.

The advance timing at which the JV appears is quite variable. Sometimes I see it with around 0.1 miles before the ramp, other times I find myself actually entering the ramp before the JV appears.

If the JV does appear longer than you want it to, remember that you can always tap the "Back" button to revert to the map. And I think that for advance viewing of the JV display, tapping the top green bar that shows your upcoming turn will cause the JV to show itself.

So with your 3760, be happy that you have split-screen JV.

Craig has answered most of your questions so I'll just comment on the first one. Yes the 3760 can use both full screen and split screen views, like the 3790. The point is that these models use split screen views by default and installing the downloaded 700+MB file takes away the split screen presentation while not providing any additional views.

Thanks Craig and 855. I didn't know the full-screen was an option for the 3760, but for just 5 seconds, is it even really even worth having? I guess for simple exits as you said.

The 3760 does support both full-screen and split-screen views like the 3790.

Unlike the 3790, the 3760 split-screen JCV file that comes with the map download is not the complete file. It is only a very limited 153MB file. To get all of the JCV images on the 3760 you must download the large full-screen file.

The split-screen view comes on at about .8 mile before the junction and stays on until you exit.

The full-screen view comes on at about .8 mile before the exit and stays on for approximately .2 mile. It always shows .6 mile to the exit when the map returns. I don't know how many seconds the full JCV is on but 6-8 seconds sounds about right.

I use the full-screen view. Mainly, I want all of the JCV's that are available. Also, the split-screen view just does not work for me.

I rely on the lane-assist arrows when I am on a trip. I only use the JCV view (1) to preview the junctions and exits before starting out and (2) as a cue to indicate that a junction is .8 mile ahead. The dramatic transition between the map view and the full-screen JCV image catches my attention. When the image reverts to the map, I quickly glance at the lane-assist arrows to confirm I am in the correct lane. This system works for me...all that counts. grin

Or the 460MB split-screen file (from a 3790 owner).

After hearing a bunch of comments on the split-screen and full-screen JCV's, I can see the advantages of each. Would be nice to have the option to decide which to use on each device, or even have the option to use full screen from 0.8 to 0.6 miles out, and then split-screen until you exit.

If the 2460 has either a 4 or 8GB internal storage drive, then you will already have the large file that is meant for your Nuvi.

The 1450 does not support split screen junction views. By default the 1450 will obtain a very small JCV file as part of the map update and if you want a full range of views you will need to download the 700+mb file linked to in the opening post of this thread. This file contains only full screen views.
