San Marcos, TX - Garmin Speed Limits Way Off

I just got back from San Marcos, TX. My Garmin Nuvi40 did an excellent job of getting me there and back, even navigating newly constructed roads correctly. But when I got within about 20 miles of the city, practically every speed limit was different from what my GPS advertised. Some were higher in real life and some were lower. The only consistency was inconsistency. Yeah. It was fun, as I don't really like to pay much more attention to things than needed. Luckily I caught on before I got into trouble.

I've run into speed zones that were off before, maybe by a block, or maybe by 5-10 mph. But this was every road I drove on from the west side of the city to about 20 miles out. And some speed limits were off by 25 mph for several blocks.

On a side note, there were so many deer in some areas outside of town that you couldn't safely drive the speed limit at night. Little bitty white-tail deer everywhere.

I've had the problem

I complained to Garmin, they asked which were off and when I told them it was all of the east coast of New Zealand apart from the big cities they were not impressed. I see now that they have change map providers to Navteq and the speed limits have improved, I originally told Garmin that a feature isn't a feature if it doesn't work. I have the same opinion about the ecoroute. EcoRoute is only a game if it isn't connected with the cable to the vehicle.

Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present...

FYI

I'm not familiar with the Nuvi40 but in my Nuvi2460 I can change the speed posted if is different from what is being displayed, this info goes into a file and when I connect to the Garmin website they can retrieve this information (I elected to share)and also my unit will know the next time I pass the same area what the correct speed limit is.

The 40 does not do this. Would be nice, as many (mostly county) roads around here have no speed limit on the Garmin.

I can break into my files

I can break into my files and change them myself from my PC, but that's not a simple task. Well, it's not difficult to do... the difficulty lies in trying to figure out which values to change.

The 40 has got a lot of features for the price, but it's a fairly simple unit.

Reporting wrong speed limits

You can report wrong speed limits to Navteq as a map report (don't bother reporting it to Garmin). On the Navteq map reporter website, you have to find the part(s) of the road that have the wrong speed limit and right click that segment of road that has the wrong speed limit and click "edit road details. When the edit screen pops up, scroll down to house numbers and speed limits and then type in the correct speed limit.

Thanks

Good to know. If I lived in the area, I'd report a ton of them. I'll keep this in mind for future issues.
