Losing Faith in Garmin Applications.

Howdy Forum Master,members and asociates.
My Garmin 1490LMT is a hard nut to crack. My unit already has the lower 49 states seperately in its unit gmapprom.img, all ok. I have placed Canada and its connecting states onto my SD/micro card, all ok.Removed the Sd card to install Mexico to my internal unit which had sufficient space to input.I used either mapinstall or mapsource for the applications.all workings seem to be fine, but it placed the new mexico installment in a new folder called "MAP". When i started my unit,I was greeted with "Cant unlock maps".The original map is all working, the SD crd is working, yet the new mexico installment cant be unlocked.Another thread told me to purge all temp folder, which I did before installment. Both applications gave me the same outcome.According to mapsource the gma file in the new mexico is not installed. why did it chose this file.i changed the gma file and still no-go. May i have your best advice and hopefull cure.5 days of misery and sleepless nights for a person that is computer savvy.

Sorry I also placed the code for the respective gma file in the new folder and still no luck.

Sorry again gentlemen/Ladies.
garmin technicians was with me for a whole hour and yet same issues. he ask me to use mapinstall and would send an email for survey with issue. never sent email still awaiting.

Supplemental map files

Is it possible your nuvi is limited to a single gmapsupp.img file (which is currently your Canada map)?

If so, try creating a single supplemental map with Canada and its connected states plus Mexico, then have this Canada/Mexico map installed to the 1490LMT as a single supplemental map.

If true, then the subject of your post maybe should read "Help me install a Supplemental Map" rather than "Losing Faith in Garmin Applications."

On another possible solution, have you deleted all unneeded files (mostly foreign language voice files from the 1490LMT)? If done, you should be able to install much more of the City Navigator map update directly into the nuvi gmapprom file without having to deal with MapInstall and Supplemental maps.

Put ALL the maps on the SD card

Or put ALL the maps on the SD card with MapInstaller. There's no advantage to splitting them, unless you have an SD card issue.

Thanks much CraigW This is exactly my point. I deleted all what you have said and my nuvi had reasonable space to input mexico to the already "gmapprom.img", only to find it made a new folder called "map".originally Canada was part of the full install, but i chose new region and installed only the lower 49 states which is the continental usa only.I place canada and its northern territories on the sd card all ok.I decided to add mexico after to the already 49 states, which created a new folder instead of adding to gmappprom.

Sounds like the software did exactly what it should have done

When you add additional map areas it doesn't add it to the existing main map file but creates another supplemental map file so the software did what it should do. Supplemental maps added to the main unit's memory are put into a "MAP" sub-directory on the newer Garmin units. That is exactly how it installed my supplemental maps on my 3790LMT and they work fine.

Thank you dave, yes i did have this angle which i know will work. But being a path finder and chance taker, luck and chance is not always the application format way.So since it seperated the mexico file in a "map" folder outside the .SYSTEM folder, why should it not work and why cant it initialize.Mexico is not part of the address.Maybe Mexico is not the start off name. The Caribbean files come under address "FRANCE".What does mexico come under.Anyway thats not the point. The point is "cant unlock maps".

1st original gmapprom.img.....all ok 49 states only.
2nd supplemtal sdmico....Canada and its territories.ok.
3rd Mexico only....installed seperate folder and not added to gmapprom.img.....false cant unlock maps

Craig you are very right and true to the point. That is exactly what it did it created a supplimented folder called "MAP.I am one of these old veterans who follow instructions to the tee and not told many times.lol. I am always happy to receive constructive advice and solutions from the intelligencia, and i salute all.

( When mapinstall told me a week a go cant find any unlock maps on this device, i went into a solution mode and found the correct answer and application).

this one has me up. I will succeed with your gracious help.

First, a note from Garmin on the 1490LMT web pages regarding lifetime map updates:

Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased

Second, a previous discussion of your very issue on another site:

http://forums.gpsreview.net/viewtopic.php?t=25497

It appears that the general consensus is that the 1490 series GPS did not come with detailed coverage of Mexico and therefore map updates will not include Mexico either--hence the "can't unlock maps" error. I do admit that there is some discussion of whether the 1490 series did come with Mexico or not. This may be the crux of your issue right now.

From one message from the above link:

Garmin's official response:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be more than happy to assist with your inquiry! The Nuvi 1490LMT came preloaded with the US and Canada. Lifetime Updates that come with a device only update what is pre-loaded on the unit. That is why it is not allowing you to download Mexico.
If the software is current on the device and Lifetime Updater, the program will automatically detect the card and use it for additional memory. The Map update includes updates for Junction View and Lane Assist.

Think back to the recent TV news regarding Occupy Wallstreet and the 99% vs the 1%. My belief is that 99% of nuvi owners will never use MapInstall or supplemental maps. This makes you one of the 1%. In my opinion, Garmin's Tech Support is pretty good when dealing with issues from the 99% but less so when trying to help one of the 1%. Believe me, I know, because I've been in your shoes and spent a lot of time on the phone or in email with Garmin's Tech Support folks--only to be given incorrect information and using up a lot of time on both my end and Garmin's end resulting in no resolution and lots of aggravation.

With time, I've tended to learn what issues Tech Support can help me with and which issues I should never discuss with them. I wonder if your trying to add Mexico to one of the lower-end nuvis that doesn't come with Mexico is one of those topics that Tech Support is not going to handle well.

Note that if you really want a detailed map of Mexico on a nuvi that didn't originally come with it, you can BUY the map:

My 1490 was purchased with 2011.2. My free update was 2011.3. Neither map had Mexico City detail.
My 295w was purchased with 2011.3 and updated with 2011.4, which is still on that unit. No Mexico City.
I purchased lifetime maps for my 1490t in August 2011. The first update was 2012.10. It did have the Mexico Maps which I was able to install with my lower 48. I had some problems with future updates so I no longer have Mexico or Canada. I use Map Install now.

To Craigw and other fellow helpers. I thank you most sincerely for your hard work, research and self help through garmin techies.yes you are quite right, it seems that mexico is not an inclusion to toal USA map volume. However what got me intrigued is the insistance of Mapsource and Map install that insisted on high lighting in yellow, Mexico, as a genuine map addition. Thanks again to your forum techs and you for complete resolution to this minor detail. I now have complete USA gmapprom on internal unit, complete Canada and its Northern territories on the sd/micro. Good work, youre a great sleuth. Im not sure what you meant by lower end nuvi, but I have a 2 weeks old garmin 140LMT for $169.00.

P.S. I do have windows 7-64 (primary), 7-32bit on seperate internal hard drive. I do have dual boot and can chose which ever.Dell Inspiron 580,19 months old.

Hi, sorry I forgot. Mexico is not an inclusion with mapudater. Mexico is Highlighted as a genuine pick via the boxed regions placed on the US map, to be included as a favorite supplemented map to your sd/micro card in MapSaource and MapInstall.(Not only the yellow highlighted regions, but the blue boxed areas as a legitimate addition/s.

Whoops

I stand corrected after a review of the current and past nuvi models. I now feel the 1490LMT to be a mid-range nuvi so my earlier comment mentioning low-end models is hereby retracted.

Not sure why you want to

Not sure why you want to split the file. Just get rid of the sd card, delete map files on your main unit, then create a full north america file and copy it to the unit. Can't get any simpler.

.

Personally, I would put the whole NA map on the card. Why wouldn't you? And, the JCV file as well.

Map Location

It makes the most sense to keep the map in one location. If you can't fit it in the internal memory, move the entire map to the SD card.

It's certainly less painful

It's certainly less painful than splitting the map between nüvi and card. I speak from personal experience on this one.

Garmin Facebook

Wan't to see what Garmin really thinks of their customers?

Go browse the Garmin FaceBook site.

https://www.facebook.com/Garmin?ref=ts&sk=wall

WHEN and IF they answer customer questions there, it is always just the phrase ".... - send us an email at social.support@garmin.com and we will be happy to look into the problems you have encountered. Thanks"

Never any real suggestions or fixes. I guess the 'help' desk does not get credit for FB cases.

Many times the person posts awhile later and says Garmin never responded.

I've suggested to many people that they go the factory forum for advice, but don't know if anyone has. Odd, but it seems like my posts disappear. Probably just being paranoid.
