New nuvi 50LM

Just got a nuvi 50LM and was able to download the lifetime map tool (I think), and was definitely able to add all the POIs (including the camera files) from my old nuvi 205 to the 50LM.

I selected the American English - Michelle voice as it sounded less robot-like than Samantha. I thought there was a problem with speaking street names, but after switching back and forth from Michelle to Samantha (and also Jack) I finally saw on the voice choices that only some speak street names. Is this common to all Garmins? I would think any voice would speak street names.

Another glitch (maybe) is that the voice doesn't say "recalculating". The unit says recalculating on the screen, but there's no voice command. Any thoughts on this?

I like the bigger screen, and the speaking of street names and I think this new unit will serve very well.

My 3590 doesn't say 'Recaulating' either

Thankfully.

When you're at the screen offering Voice choices, look either for "Speaks Street Names" or TTS following the Voice's name. These are the only voices that you have that will speak street names. Note also that all free or paid extra voices available will not speak street names:

Thanks CraigW! If I had half a brain I'd be an idiot as I completely missed the "Speaks Street Names" on the language screen.

As to paid street names, doesn't the following mean if you buy 'Darth Vader' he will speak street names:

"Darth Vader
Submit to the commands of Darth Vader with this Star Wars voice and graphics bundle. Follow his turn-by-turn directions precisely to the destination you seek (other than Alderaan)."

Curse my ignorance to Hades.

Darth does not speak street names

No, he just tells you to turn right in so many feet, and so on. A non-TTS voice is nothing but a group of audio files combined into one file. There is no Test To Speech emulator like in the TTS voices.

Footnote #1 for both Darth and Yoda voices:

¹ Voices are for entertainment purposes only and do not provide text-to-speech navigation

Aha.

Regardless of brain mass, I am idiot. grin

Recalculating

Later models of Garmin no longer speak the word recalculating.

Garmin Nuvi 50LM

I too have purchased this, and I am liking it! Nice, big screen. Easy-to-hear audio. And compatible with all of my icons and pois from before!

No Traffic Confirmation?

I read elsewhere that the Nuvi 50 is not capable of receiving traffic data, even with a transmitter in place. Is that correct?

Is that something that could be added later in a firmware update or in another way?

Not a deal breaker; just curious.

Nuvi 50 CANNOT receive traffic

Sorry but the Nuvi 50 is not able to receive traffic even if you bought a traffic receiver and subscription.

Please look under specifications under "Fetaures & Benefits", then scroll down to "Traffic Compatible.

That's what I had read and just wanted to be sure. Thanks!

Junction View is Great

We took a trip to Erie PA and saw the junction views for the first time. Pretty helpful and very cool as well.

A couple of times the GPS took us ways we knew weren't the best, but since we forgot the way we had gone in the past, the GPS got us where we were going, as it always does.

Very satisfied with the nuvi 50M.

Nuvi50lm voices

So there are only 2 American-English voices for the 50LM. One is nice and clear but doesn't speak street names; another speaks street names but is rather muffled. You can download Jack, who speaks street names but has a heavy English accent and it's sometimes hard to determine whether he's saying "right" or "route" or "rot". Is there nothing available that speaks street names clearly? Why only 2 voices for the 50???

Add more through web updater. You should get an option to take additional updates. You might have to be careful. Your unit has only 1.76GB of storage which might be the reason for only a couple of voices. Doesn't mean you can't replace them with something you like.

I miss the "recalculating..."

I miss the recalculating..., especially since I changed mine on our older GPS to say...are you a better GPS?.

I know this discussion is 6 months old.

But I found it while searching for info about TTS voices for my Nuvi 50LM. I used the webupdater program and found several additional English TTS voices for my unit including Karen from "down under". She was my favorite from my old 260W. Nice to have a familiar voice telling me where to go. smile
