1450 sluggish when entering POI name

Hi everyone,

I picked up a 1450LMT a few months ago and find that it seems sluggish when I try to enter a POI by name (i.e. shopping -> spell name) On my 350 it will usually keep up with my typing speed but on the 1450 it lags behind to a point where I have to wait about 1-1.5 seconds before I can enter the next character. Any ideas?

I do have the latest FW and running the latest maps off of a 8GB class 4 SD card. Hmm, after typing that last sentence I just realized that I could go back to the onboard maps and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks!

Timing

Does the timing matter?

By this I mean, has the unit acquired satellites at the time you try to access the POI?

What might the unit be trying to do at the time you are typing?

I've had my 1300 ready to

I've had my 1300 ready to navigate and it will still have difficulty keeping up with my input. I'd love to figure out what it's doing behind the scenes, but that I don't believe is its problem. I chalk it up to a firmware bug and call it a day.

Timing

I've tried this in both cases where the unit has acquired signal and before it has acquired signal.

No difference that I can tell.

Running 2013.10 maps and SW version 5.90

Other observations:

- Switched back to the 2012.40 maps on the main unit. No change.

- Turned on GPS sim mode aka GPS off, No change.

- Entering an address, street name is no problem. Very responsive.

- Sluggish only when you try to Spell Name in Points of Interest. When I tap a letter it will at times remain highlighted for a second before I can move onto the next character. Deleting characters is also sluggish but again only in the POI area.

Thanks for the replies!

Longshot

Assuming you're using the Qwerty keyboard, try changing it to ABCDE and see if that does anything.
Also check to see if the Keyboard Language is set to American English.

I'll have to switch

I'll have to switch keyboards and see if that helps. I use the British English keyboard.

Switch Keyboards

Please let us know the results.

Still the same...

Just tried switching keyboard over to "ABCDE" mode and verified that I'm using American English keyboard. Keyboard is still sluggish when trying to enter a name of a POI.

Bugs

Nothing changes when I change keyboards. That's why I think it's a bug. Not a severe one, but a bug nevertheless.

Sorry

I'm sorry to hear it didn't work.

Again a real longshot, I'm wondering if the touchscreen could be the culprit. Since you are touching a wide area on the screen maybe certain spots are not responding quickly enough.

Does this happen on any letter you choose or all of them? If all then, we can rule that out.

I'm now out of ideas, I beleive Strephon_Alkhalikoi
is correct with the cause being a bug.

touchscreen

The lag is pretty much on all letters including the delete button and cursor left/right.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the same keyboard is shown when entering a street address and there is no lag there.

The only other thing I can think of is that it's doing a search in the background that's causing CPU load. For example, If I go to POI -> Shopping -> All it then starts searching for all local shopping POI's. If I press "Spell Name" does it really cancel the previous search operation or does it background that search?

Then again, it still lags if I go to POI and go directly to "Spell Name" without triggering any sort of search operation.

Oh well, thanks for all the insight. I guess it's better than getting crashes while routing.sad

I have an 855

that does that when I input and address. It seems that it is allways the third letter that is hesitant. The other functions does okay.

I did the spell name about 8 times. I get just a slight hesitation on most key strokes after the second one. But maybe a half second.
I did have a satellite lock.

Personally I think probably it has something to do with the SD

card or the bus of SD card on the unit is bad?

Fairly sure it's not the SD

I switched back over to the onboard maps and still experienced the same problem. What I didn't do was physically pop the card out. I guess I can try that unless you guys are completely tired of this topic wink

Take The SD Card Out

Remove the SD card and try.
If you have nore than 1 map which covers duplicate areas, it will affect the searchh function.
Make sure the map on the Nuvi is checked after removing SD card.

Card out

So I popped the card out and still see the delay. The good thing is in most cases you can type ahead of the system and it will "catch up"

Just to be clear even though I have maps on internal memory as well as SD I never have both maps selected at the same time.

Sluggish when typing name

After 3 years I;ve almost given up trying to type anything on my nuvi 855. It seems that the screen is extremely sensitive to the touch "level". Unfortunaly, when I'm sitting in the friver's seat trying to type, my touch level tends to vary. My passengers touch level is also quite different than mine.
I find the same touch problem when trying to move the location of the map.
I just accept it and use various means to avoid having to use the touch sreen.

nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

pencil eraser

I have a 765T and I find that a pencil eraser is the best way to use the touch screen - especially to enter addresses.

Right thumb

On my 40, my right thumb selects the correct letter, while my left thumb has no effect. Hmmmm.
