Garmin Red Light Cameras

My Garmin-supplied redlight camera alerts are no longer working. The only thing I've changed is that I'm using some of the free Custom POI's here.

Expired?

I'm not sure since I don't have a new nuvi with that feature but don't these Garmin alerts come with an expiration and require a subscription? If so, could your subscription have expired?

Garmin Red Light Camera Alerts

The subscription is supposed to be for 1 year, but I bought and registered my NUVI 40 this past December.

In that case

Well, in that case, maybe someone who knows can tell you how to check the status of your redlight subscription to make sure that Garmin, you and your nuvi are all agreed on a future expiration date. Assuming your subscription is still active, a search on your nuvi looking to see if Alerts have been turned off or something else has occurred may be your next step. Good luck.

...

[Later]One other thought since you say you've loaded some Custom POIs to your nuvi using POI Loader.

When you've run POI Loader, you may have gotten a pop-up window saying "The Custom POI file named xxx already exists. Would you like to overwrite the file?" Did you see this message and did you say tap "Yes"?

If so, is there a chance that the Garmin-supplied redlight data file was overwritten with your Custom POI? We need someone else with Garmin-supplied redlight data who uses POI Loader and knows something about file names in their nuvi to report back and tell us if there's any chance the Garmin-supplied file could be overwritten by POI Loader.

I thought of this when I thought back to another thread where a trucker with one of the trucker GPS units (4xx or dezl?) used POI Loader and managed to overwrite the special Garmin-supplied trucker data files used for their special purpose POIs.

The other possibility is if you searched the files on your nuvi and somehow deleted or renamed the file for the Garmin-supplied redlight file.

Also could be that when I wanted to change the proximity of some of the alerts, POILoader deleted the current files. I've logged the problem on Garmin help. Let's see if they really help.

Update: I backed-up my Garmin a few months ago. When I looked at this backup, I noticed a file named "USCanadaCyclopsSample.gpi" in the same directory as the Current.gpx file. Now the POI file shows up on my Proximity Alerts. YAY!!!

Now let's see what the Garmin "help" desk tells me to do.

Well done, Mr. Past-BackerUpper!

It will be interesting to see in the future if that file disappears again and what may cause it. But for now, you're set. It also will be interesting to see if Garmin's reply to your email will correctly identify the issue and direct you to the solution you've found yourself.

Do we know how often Garmin revises their redlight file and if the name of the file changes?

And David, when your year's subscription ends, you may want to consider dropping a renewal and go with the redlight and speed camera file offered here at The Factory.

Garmin "help" desk

Here is what the Garmin "help" desk says.

"The Safety Camera subscription was just a trial so to reinstall it you will need to purchase a download."

HA!

The second email says "The Safety Camera was just a trial subscription so its possible that it is out of date. Unfortunately if POI loader is capable of removing that information it is not possible to reinstall a trail subscription."

So, either they do not know about the USCanadaCyclopsSample.gpi file, or else they are lying to me.

POI Loader strikes again

USCanadaCyclopsSample.gpi file and the 3 NTTS files used for truckers are both stored in the POI folder on the dezl. If you tell the POI Loader to remove custom POI's it will delete everything in the extras folder including the ones Garmin loaded. I would think the nuvi does the same thing. Garmin support told me to only use POI Loader to install custom POI and remove the files manualy. Just go to the POI folder and delete/remove them. only use POI Loader to install custom POI.

On my NUVI, the Custom POI's and the cyclops files are in different folders. /GPS for the cyclops and /POI for the custom files. The POI loader does not delete the cyclops, but it does the custom (of course).

However, I agree that the best way to delete the custom POI's is to manually delete it.

.

When these subscriptions expire, all that happens is that don't get the latest database file. The last file on your unit gotten via subscription should still function normally.

Garmin's file is wrong . . .

At least as far as the one RLC I drive by every day in Montreal. It has it a block to the South (at least it is before) where it actually is.

In the car, which has a 3790 with Garmin's service I use my own RLC file for local cameras and the POI-Factory list for the rest, even though it seems to not know about one in Ottawa that I pass by that Garmin DOES know about.

If the POI-Factory file misses one, the Garmin file seems to make up for it, but I won't pay Garmin for the service when we have our community supported one here.

However their updates should mention that the trial has expired if they want to ever sell a subscription to anyone. And perhaps the RLC updates should be included with Numaps?

sure

If I have the presence of mind to log the intersection as a waypoint . . . . but how often am I in Ottawa (which is where this happened)?

I save the location as a favorite, then when I am back online, bring it up to get the coordinates.
