Recent theft of my Garmin GPS unit.

I was travelling via plane (Had a holdover in Washington DC) from Vermont to Norfolk Virginia. My Garmin 2720 GPS unit was packed inside my checked luggage. When i arrived home the actual gps unit and it's cable were stolen (They left the base unit). I ended up filing a police report (Vermont was the last place I had the unit so had to file it there).

Has anyone else had a unit stolen before and were you able to recover it? I talked to garmin who logged the serial number as stolen in case it shows up at their offices for repair or updating.

Garmin says the GPS units are receivers only so they cannot track it like you can a cell phone. Any other suggestions on how to recover the unit?

Stolen GPS

These units are often stolen as they are popular and small. I recently purchased a Nuvi 680 and it has a lock feature which would make it useless to thieves. If more units were so equiped it might begin to deter theft.

Stolen gps

Was it stolen during the transportation of your checked luggage? At the airport or in process. If so, wouldn't you also file a claim or report at the airport?

Checked luggage

I have had worries about the same thing happening to me. I never put my GPS in checked luggage. It stays with me at all times.

.

I never check any of my electronic devices. I always put them in my carry on bag. I put all the cords and cables in the checked baggage, though.

The OP definitely should file a report with the airline.

Never check

I keep mine in the same carry on that I carry my computer. Also, there is the chance that you can use it on the airplane.

CARRY IT

I always carry mine.
If I get a rental car, I need it, If I use a CAB, I always use it.
You would be suprised at the times I catch the cabbies trying to take a long way around.
Since I started using it when I get in CAB's, I always tell the driver I'm testing my GPS for the trip. (They usally look disqusted, but don't complain to much)

My laptop, radar detector and GPS stay with me all the time when I fly. Which I will be flying Jet Blue (my favorite airline) tomorrow. I haven't used my GPS on JetBlue yet, so I am sorta curious about it.

Yeah, when I was in Charlotte about 3 months ago, I had to get a cab since I wrecked the car and I know that he HAD to take the long way. Ended up costing $55
