Extra POI Editor - Conversion Problems

I'm using Extra POI Editor to edit the Diner's Drive-in's & Dives POI. The thing is that I had a Garmin which uses GPX format and now I have a TomTom which uses OV2 format. The GPX version uses the street, city state and other fields, but when I save it as a OV2 for TomTom it strips out all the data fields except the Name & Phone number.

Does anyone know of a better conversion program?

RE: Extra POI Editor - Conversion Problems

TOM-TOM's format only uses 3 fields, lat/lon and name. You could probably do better starting with the CSV and then concatenating the last two fields. Convert the mashed CSV to OV2, it should help.

TOMTOM POI files

Correct. TT POI files have only 3 fields: lon, lat and name. The name field has only 128 characters. EPE has to truncate anything that is longer than that.

Why not use the ov2 format right from the site here?

That OV2 file will only display the restaurant names. It won't include the phone numbers.

But its not clear what he is exactly looking for.

True, but I thought I'd mention it because:

  1. The direct OV2 download will not include all of the information in the CSV file (specifically, it won't have the information from column 4), and
  2. That OV2 file will contain even less information than what he gets when he uses EPE to save the GPX file as an OV2.

I guess I'm just disappointed w/ the lack of info w/ TT

It was nice having the street address, State & Ph #. For instance, I could sort my favorite POI's by state, if on a trip to a particular region.

It is what it is... so I'll adapt. sad

You could always maintain your data in EPE and then "Save As" OV2 just for use on your TomTom. That way you'll still have the phone number.

If you're talking about the sorting of individual POI entries on the TomTom itself you'll usually find that they sorted by distance from a particular spot, e.g.,

- sorted by proximity to your current location if you choose "POI near you", or

- sorted by distance from the centre of town if you choose "POI in city".

The order of the POI records in the OV2 file itself is actually irrelevant.

No, I was referring to

No, I was referring to sorting a POI database (like Diners, Drive-ins & Dives) to include just those along a particular route, say 4 or 5 states for use during a road trip.

It appears as if I'll need to maintain the CSV database and convert it to OV2 for use on my TomTom if I want to keep the addresses and other info on file.

that's possible

Turbo built that into EPE several releases back. Charlie uses it and can give you instructions on how to do it. I did it once or twice, but forgot the steps.

Find POI on Route

1- Load a route
2- File -> MErge Open and select one or more POI files
3- Edit -> Find POIs on Route

You can specify a distance to a route. On first try, do not load 1 million POIs. I do not remember how long the search will take... smile It also depends on how long is the route.

4- The editor now contains only the POIs found. Click View -> View All POIs on Map to view the road and all the selected POIs.

thanks

Thanks!

I tried the excel conversion once, but was shooting from the hip w/out any real guidance. Now that I've got a `recipe' I'll give it another shot...

Will this work for TomTom? I see Garmin GPX. I guess I have to subsitute OV2 for the GPX?
