Garmin StreetPilot Onboard With iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (3rd Generation), And iPad

I know that there have been some posts last year about this application, but I am now interested in this and I hope some people have this and can answer some questions. I don't have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, but my wife and both of our sons each ahs an iPod Touch. I am considering buying an Apple device for this application and some others. Anyway, for those familiar with this, would you recommend an iPhone 3GS or an iPod Touch (3rd Generation)? I don't think I need the latest version of either the iPhone or the iPod Touch, so that is why I ahve focused on those two for now. It looks like a refurbished, unlocked iPhone 3GS can be purchased for about $349.99 and the iPod Touch (3rd Generation) for $169.00. Anyway, I would like to hear any comments about how well this works compared to a stand alone GPS and whether you think it is advisable to just get an iPod Touch (3rd Generation) or if it would be better to just get an iPhone 3GS. Also, my current cell phone service is with T-Mobile, so I am aware that I would need to have this unlocked for T-Mobile and the data would just be Edge rather than 3G.

As a side note, I would also consider a smaller iPad when, of if, they ever make one. I suppose a 7 inch screen would be a bit big for many vehicles, but it would work for larger vehicles.

Also, are there any specific windshield mounts that are better than others for this application? I know that they are not all created equally and I would want to get a good one.
