specialized vs multi-purpose
If done by a good design team, the specialized device should do better at its chosen task than similar functions in a multi-purpose device.
Setting out to do something such as car nav, you don't have the constraints of the multi-purpose/multi-function device (key among those when comparing to smart phones is power consumption).
So yes, my Nuvi GPS system is better at car GPS than my iPhone. But the Nuvi can't make phone calls like my iPhone.
And neither can drive nails like my framing hammer.
Pick the proper tool for the job -- some times you can do it with a multi-purpose device, but some times you're better off with that dedicated tool.
Nuvi 2460, 680, DATUM Tymserve 2100, Trimble Thunderbolt, Ham radio, Macintosh, Linux, Windows
It all depends on the job to be done

To take it a step further, my nuvi is great for in-car navigation and is ok for walking in an unfamiliar neighborhood. My Garmin waterproof, AA battery powered, outdoor oriented GPSmap 76csx is much better than the nuvi for hiking where is gets bounced off rocks on occasion.

I'll admit it, the day's been long already where I live... Still, that was the first understanding I had.
Please don't hate me ? Some day I hope to make it to such fame as my mentor, Patrick F. McManus. Look him up, read at least a few pages in one of his first books, and if you can make it without one stop and a "Honey, you gotta listen to this section", then you're hopeless.
Oh, needless to say you'll be in the same boat if you canNOT make it past such a test, don't worry
Heck, I should know, I started collecting his books some twenty-fi... twenty-fi.. twenty-fi... ah, can't say it, but it's been almost a quarter of a century !
Ain't nuthin' never just right to do the things you wanna do when you wanna do them, so you best just go ahead and do them anyway ! (Rancid Crabtree, from Pat F McManus fame)
cool gaget
Thanks for the link

A GPS can take you where You want to go but never where you WANT to be.
