Nuvi 3490 & Mini SD Card question

Hi, I received a new 3490 and the first thing that I did was update it to the latest firmware over the weekend when I first received it, and everything worked like clockwork. Since then, i've gotten a mini SD card and inserted it (not to really put anything on it at the moment, but just to have that "open" hole plugged in so to speak). With the mini SD card plugged in, I could access and browse it from my Vista PC without any issues. Well yesterday, Garmin came out with a new firmware update 4.40 and when attempting to update the device via the Garmin MyDashboard website, I kept getting a "MTP_Devicenumeration.cpp" error and it wouldn't "see" the device for me to update. On the Garmin FAQ site, it says this specific error is likely due to using a USB hub, however I am connecting the device directly to my computer and not via a USB hub. Figuring that the only change between my initial successful firmware update to this new one was the insertion of the micro SD card, I took the card out and reconnected to my computer and now MyGarmin dashboard recognized it and allowed me to update the firmware.

The question for you experts is whether anyone came across this and could offer any insight. With the micro SD card inserted into the 3490, I can browse it when connected to my computer, and I could put files on it and such and the Garmin works fine. However, when it comes to updating the Garmin device with the SD card inserted, i would get errors preventing the update. Not a big deal i guess in the grand scheme of things since any future updates i could just pull the card out, however wondering if there are any other problems/issues lurking around the corner by using this card?

Thanks Craig, but the problem the links you quoted were solving was the fact that the sd card was not being recognized as a drive when connected to the computer. I don't have that problem, my computer recognizes the sd card just fine and as mentioned i can transfer files to/from it like any external storage device. My problem is that the Garmin updater doesn't allow me to update the 3490 with the card in the device, but allows me to update it with the card out. Not sure why since i don't even use the sd card as part of the update process.

Since I don't have one of these, I can only guess. Is it possible that you need to go from Mass Storage back to "Auto" for the firmware update to take when the SD card is in place?

But since you can update with the card out, you're set to go anyway. Good finding!

I did access the developer screens and saw that I had my 3490 set to "Auto", I believe that's the default for a new device. I changed it to mass storage, and will see with the next firmware update if i get an error of any kind when trying to update with the mini sd card in the slot.
