Can my 2460 remember a route exactly as I took it

I have a frustrating problem. On a few occasions (like this Thanksgiving) I had to travel to see the family and wanted to take a particular route that Nuvi could not find (1&9 to i295 for those who want to avoid the turnpike).

For whatever reason Nuvi will not see 295 as a possible route through New Jersey -- only 95 (even tho the two roadways are paralell to one another). In Nuvi's defense, neither Mapquest nor Google Maps would choose 295 either. So I went in and had to manually create a route that included 295.

Trip's over, things went great. Now I want to save the route. If I save it as a favorite place, when I veiw the travel instructions Nuvi does not see my custom route.

So to be clear is there a way to save a route exactly as I have driven it after the trip was taken?

On a side note -- is there a way to get statistics on the trip -- like how long the trip took, how long the car was driving, how many stops were made, etc?

Avoidances

I don't know the answer to your question on whether a track can be saved as a route.

I think the best way to do what you want is to use the "Avoidances" feature of the 2460 and let it calculate its own route. Set it to avoid route 95. Then, the route it calculates will probably use 295. Some tweaking might be needed in that other roads might need avoidances, but once the route is saved it will always be the same.

How do I save?

Its the last part of your statement that's important to me. I know all about avoidances and what not, I just want to know that once the route is used, it will be saved. I assume after I use the route it will be saved or if I import a route (ala mapquest) it will be saved exactly as I created it in mapquest.

But from my simulations Nuvi seems to want to use its own route instead. Is this a false reading on what I am seeing?

Importing a route

Importing a route from Mapquest is not as simple as letting the nuvi calculate its own route. The nuvi will take a Mapquest route and recalculate it. The main reason to let the nuvi do it in the first place is because of the "Avoidances" feature, which is very good in my opinion.

Everything is done in the nuvi menus. Before you start driving, set the avoidance for route 95 and create a new route using your starting point and destination. If the route goes on one road or another you don't want, just add another avoidance and create the route again.

If the route goes on 295 and everything is like you want it, name and save the route in the nuvi; the last part of the "Create Route" routine. Once it is saved in the nuvi you can always use it in the future. This works in one direction only. Create another new route for the opposite direction. There is a limit to the number of routes saved in the nuvi - read the manual and specifications.

I295

What I do is go the MapSource and map out a route using way points. When it is the way that I want it I save it and up load it to the GPS as a Custom Route. Then it is there when ever you want it. I do this all the time when I ride my motorcycle and go from the shore area to PA and stay off of the major highways.

Me too Mapsource

I set waypoints for the places I want to go and for places that are on the roads I want to take. Then I make the route with all my waypoints and put it in my 2450. This works great from Mapsource. If you don't care what roads you take you can leave out the waypoints for places on the roads. I like to stay on small roads so I will place a waypoint just past the intersection I want to take so the route will turn on the road I want to use.

Exactly

That's how I create routes on my 1490

That is what I

do with Mapquest.

Saving routes

Thanks for the reply dobs108, but again, I know how to do the custom routes and the import from Mapquest. I had success doing the very thing you mentioned this Thanksgiving.

My question is if the route will get saved exactly as imported/driven and it seems the answer to my question is yes.

Perhaps I was misinterpreting what I was seeing. I am going to see if it gets saved properly when I try the route again later.

Thanks...

Recalculating

The route is saved as a series of waypoints. The unit (at least mine which do not include your 2460 model) always recalculate and plot a route according to the algorithms in that unit and mapset. Once the unit has calculated a route, that is what is saved.

Good luck on this, I've found routes laid out in even Mapsource get changed after transfer to the unit.

Easier using avoidances

Mapquest does not have avoidances. Since you do not want to go by the most direct route, a route can be designed in Mapquest using a number of waypoints to force the route the way you want it.

I think it would be easier to design the route in the nuvi because its avoidances feature would reduce the number of waypoints required. I think avoidances is one of the most important GPS features today and I would want to make good use of it.

It's your choice.
