755T Language problem (set language text to french)

Hi everybody, any help would be welcome! :

If I set language text to french, as soon as I reboot the device, the default state, ie. Québec,Canada has disapeared. If I hit the "change state or country" button, it cannot find anything. If device is setted in English, there's no problem whatsoever.

My firmware is up to date and this problem occured with the 2012.20 update and is still there in the 2012.30 mapset.

I remember back in early 2010, the same exact problem occured with an update, but Garmin were fast to fix it with another minor update (something like 2010.2 to 2010.21).

I tried to explain that to a Garmin representative, but my spoken english sucks and he wasn't able to figure out what was my problem, ie. what I was trying to say : )

Thanks in advance!

.

Try using the WebUpdater to DL the language updates.

from bad to worst : )

Thanks Juggernaut for your advice,

I tried webupdater and all my files were up to date. So I thought to myself that maybe some of mine were corrupt and I deleted them and ran webupdater again but it wasn't offering anything. So I guess that once one do an update, the info goes into a file in the device instead of webupdater having to perform a simple files cheksum..which I think is lame..

Before deleting all files, I went ahead and tried many other language and they were all working great. Of course I had a backup, but only for my french text files.. So here I am now with only one language and the one that actually don't work : ) What a mess!

I see in your sig that you own a 775t, it'll be nice if you could upload french and american english text files for me! I mean, really nice!

If your french text file is not working on mine, I guess it would mean that there's something else screwed on the device. If that's the case, I'd be more then happy to be able to use at least the english files and forget once and for all that I bang my head over this : )

.

I'll have to get to this over the next week or so. Have patience.

Might be able to help

Miam
I have a 765T that I have backup files for.
I looked at the text files but I don't see any for American English, only British English, that seems odd. There are 3 text files for French as shown below:
French.gtt - 252KB
French_Prx.gtt - 2KB
French_Trf.gtt 190KB

In the help folder I do have below:
American English= 92 files 62.2KB
French= 93 Files 78.3KB

I trid to send you a personal message but unable to since you are a new member.
If you want, click on my user name, then click contact. Send me an email where I can forward you an zipped attachement with the files you need.

Maybe somebody else can chime in and check their units to see if they have American English Text files.
I'm curious as to why mine are missing.

American English is built

American English is built into the firmware on units that have a .System directory. Thus no American English .GTT file.

755T Doesn't Have a.sys Folder

The 765T does not have a .sys directory, the folders are located in the Garmin root directory.

I just found a backup DVD I did when the 765T was factory fresh, again NO American English Text files there, only British English.

Maybe you're on to something there with it being in the firmware.

Since you seem to be more knowledgeable than I regarding software, what do you think about this suggestion?

Miam can go into the Garmin directory on his 755T and rename the GUPDATE.GCD file to GUPDATE.OLDGCD.
Then use Web Updater to check for updates again.
No harm done since the file can always be renamed back. I've read the file can safely be deleted and wil be recreated when a new update takes place.
Always wise to keep a backup and make sure the battery fully charged before doing a firmware update.

I had forgotten that I had

I had forgotten that I had edited the British English keyboard file in my 200W to provide for a near-QWERTY layout. I thought I had edited the American English file, but there isn't one. So, American English is in the firmware, and I can verify that on the 200W by yanking all the keyboards. I've already verified it in the 1300LM and Garmin Mobile XT, but both of those have .System directories.

Renaming GUPDATE.GCD to GUPDATE.OLD won't help, and if all he wants to do is reinstall the existing firmware WebUpdater gives him the option to do so. If he wants to go to an older firmware he has to find it on the Internet, download it, and maually install it since Garmin no longer keeps copies of older firmware on their servers. GARMINDEVICE.XML will recreate itself if deleted, but I believe GUPDATE.GCD stays dead and gone if deleted.

But by all means, make a backup before trying anything.

Lets Wait

Perhaps we should wait for a reply from miam before we continue this discussion. Makes no sense without any input from him/her.

Thanks for the heads up

Thanks for the heads up guys!

I guess the american english making part of system files is more than plausible. In fact, when I deleted all my language text files, the nuvi was already set to this language, so I presumed that upon next reboot I would have lost them and being stock with only my possibly corrupted french files.

I tried without(.xml and .gcd files)but as expected, there was no effet. I think webupdater stores the info in an unknown file as fallow: "dude, those files were already updated so I don't give a damn if they are not on your device anymore" and by doing so don't give the opportunity to redownload.

@ muell9k, your files are indeed more welcome then never; if that don't fix my problem, I guess I'll put this troubleshooting in the cold case bin and "Where to? instead of "Où aller?".

Anyways, thanks again ya'll!

Files Sent

Have sent you the French Text files and both the French & American English Help files.

Hope they help.

Thanks for the files! I've

Thanks for the files!

I've tried them, but without any luck. I'm pretty sure now that the problem comes from the mapset itself as it happened in the past.

Firmware update 4.20 was supposed to fix this kind of issues with 3rd-party maps, but I guess that Garmin's dumb enough by not applying this to what comes from them:

>Part of the changelog of 4.20:
"Fixed an error that prevented a user from selecting a Country or State/Province while searching for an address using third-party maps."

Anyways, thanks for the help, you were usefull!

You're Very Welcome

Sorry to hear it didn't correct your problem.

You stated you tried to speak to Garmin about this but your English is not good and they didn't understand you. I must say, your writting in English is better than I can do.

One more suggestion, maybe you have a friend that is more fluent in English that could interpret for you while on the phone with Garmin. My past experience with them is that they were very patient and did not try to end our conversation prematurely.

Thanks for the comment, I

Thanks for the comment,

I guess my brain process words more efficiently through my hands then through my mouth. Maybe I'll try to give it an other go, but I'm already fed up with Garmin first line reps as they seems to know no shizer..

Just maybe

I'm thinking part of this problem you have is, you may need the French Canadian files, not just the Parisian French... mais non?

I can help with those.

French Canadian files,

French Canadian files, really? I wasn't aware of that. If they do exist, I'll take them for sure!

Contact me

I'll send you a few files you can test from my backup.
