New scam by local LEO’s

New scam by local LEO’s
I have been noticing the length of time for yellow lights in areas I have driven throughout Pennsylvania. (My wife and I drive a great deal) It’s uniformly been about a second for ever mph.
Lately I have noticed local LEO’s, in different municipalities where we have been, near intersections. Depending on traffic the yellow light interval has been dramatically reduced. Four seconds yesterday and now two seconds today AND …of course the “running a red light ticket” shows up. Seems the locals are controlling the time of the yellow light and waiting to pounce on the driver.
Just an observation….

And you are surprised by this?? How can they make any money if the cameras don't generate any tickets? OF COURSE they'll drop the yellow light intervals.

Not Surprised...

There aren't any rules anymore. Anything goes

Western PA will soon have them

RLCs coming soon to Pittsburgh and some surrounding communities... We'll have this type of 'fun' soon too.

Larry

Flashing Red Light ...

It means "stop" and proceed when clear.

But what-if there are two [2] signs. Both say,
"Right Turn Approved at All Times".

The Trooper says; not, and wrote the ticket.

The Judge looks at the photos ... and decides that the
Trooper is wrong. He then advises that I still have to
pay $182 in court costs. SoAB!

It's too bad the people can't start a class action lawsuit against garbage like that. They used to call the Chicago cops crooks when common practice was to hand them a folded up ten dollar bill along with your drivers license. I see very little difference here.

People in Philly have been

People in Philly have been getting "red light camera" tickets for pulling past the sensor that trips the camera but not going thru the light.

New scam by local LEO’s

Not to sound like a wet blanket here, but how do you know that the local LEOs are responsible? In my area, which is Minnesota, I think traffic engineering units of local government deal with those issues. So, for example, if the members of a neighborhood wanted a stop sign installed at a certain intersection, they could call the police department and ask to have one installed, BUT the police department could not simply call public works and have it installed. Now maybe it is different in your area, but at least in my area there is more to it than it appears.

Now in this case we are discussing traffic semaphores, but I really doubt that someone can just adjust it to suit their own interests. I also realize that things are different in different areas. Having just spend most of the past 6 weeks in Atlanta, I suddenly realized that things are very different there from my suburban Twin cities Minnesota area!

This has been going on in FL

This has been going on in FL for some time area, specifically in the Tampa Bay area

Here

In Ohio, the state is responsible for traffic control (traffic lights, stop/yield signs, speed limits, etc) but only on state roads. Streets that aren't part of the state highway system are the responsibility of the local government. So a local municipality can pretty much do what they want with lights at city street intersections.

18,000K people

I believe they mentioned the requirement of at least 18,000K people need to live in the area before they are allowed to put in the cameras.

"State senators, by a 35-14 vote, on Tuesday approved Senate Bill 595 that would extend Philadelphia's ability to use red-light cameras through 2016 and allow second-class cities and third-class cities with populations of at least 18,000 and a full-time police force, such as Altoona and Johnstown, to install the devices if they choose."

don't be surprised if RLC show up at those intersections, they can say we didn't shorten the yellow lights when we put in the cameras.

Shortened yellow lights

I found this site on-line.

http://www.shortyellowlights.com/standards/

Yellow Light Time Standards

Legislation mandating proper yellow light times is mostly non-existent. It is one of the goals of this project to establish national standards to protect motorists.

For the purposes of this project, we have put together a general guide to appropriate yellow light durations.

This guide is intended to help identify potentially dangerous short yellow light times. Whenever possible, suspicious timings will be confirmed by a trained, objective traffic engineer.

Recommended Yellow Light Times
Three seconds should be the absolute minimum time for any intersection.

25 MPH -- 3.0 Seconds
30 MPH -- 3.5 Seconds
35 MPH -- 4.0 Seconds
40 MPH -- 4.5 Seconds
45 MPH -- 5.0 Seconds
50 MPH -- 5.5 Seconds
55 MPH -- 6.0 Seconds

Red Light Citations Drop Below One Per Day

What they don't say is if the vioations are "Right Turn on Red" which is what most of the violations are. I go through 3 Red Light Cameras on the way to and from work. One is on a side street and has no effect on my driving. Another I go straight through and if the light turns yellow, I stop. The last one is a Right Turn on Red and like ALL right turns I come to a full and complete stop, look left, right and across, and then proceed. Unfortunately, most drivers are scared to death of the Red Light Cameras and they stop and wait for the green light.

The one assumption I would have to question is T(pr) being 1 second. I wouldn't give the average driver that much credit.

I noticed at one red light camera that the light went from green to yellow/red very quickly.

Instead of complaining here, why not contact Fox News? I would love to see that yellow lights are now <= 2 sec. on Roosevelt Blvd. A couple of weeks ago we drove the entire length from Bucks County to 76E to Rt. 1 south. That means we hit every red light cam on the Boule. Didn't have a single problem and we did have to stop for red, at least 2 cams. No abrupt stops, no rear-end collisions, and I didn't feel violated Constitutionally-speaking. When the light was green, we went. When it was yellow, we went unless we approached on yellow. When it was red, we stopped.

You're missing the point

When cities shorten the yellow to make money from RLC's, that's wrong.

Genuine infractions? Everyone is all for it. Scamming the system? Not so much.
