Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? - November 2011

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

FOOD

Drove out to the delta Sunday for lunch. Did notice my bloody gps wanted to drive east on a westbound one way street. Darn near did it, can't stand her bit&hing at me when I don't obey her.

Upcoming trip. Heading to

Upcoming trip. Heading to Akumal, Mexico for a week in November with a stop in Scottsdale to see my parents on the way back for 4 days.

VA <> MD

Using the Garmin a lot to reach various locations around VA and MD the past couple of weeks. Often it's not the best route (if you know your way around the places you're trying to reach), but nonetheless, it always get me to the final destination.

Beautiful at this time of year. My nuvi 760 continued to work reliably. I try to get to Yosemite several times a year since it is one of my favorite spots.

Cruise

Went for a final cruise with a few buddies before we store our "fun" cars for the winter.

picked a random route through street up north and back all with the help of my Garmin.

San Antonio

Made a trip to San Antonio and back this week, driving to the airport and flying in. Just took my Android phone and used the Google Nav app to get around. Cellular signal strength was strong and reliable (Virgin Mobile/Sprint network), and the navigation performance was very satisfactory - no issues encountered with the directions - and quite a bit of fine Tex-mex cuisine consumed as a result!

Down the Atlantic Cost

Great trip in portions of VA and NC down the coast. POIs came in handy!

Every Day

The GPS is in the car or truck every day. We don't go anywhere without it.

Myrtle Beach Trip

Got back two weeks ago from a great trip, from Kitchener, Ontario, to Savannah, GA and North Myrtle Beach.

We had never been to Savannah before and found it to be a beautiful city, with lots of history and charm. Found it’s worth paying a few extra bucks to stay right in the heart of the historic district. Staybridge Hotel was reasonably priced and two blocks from the river.

Stayed a week in North Myrtle Beach and discovered a great family owned restaurant called Hoskins, on Main Street, near Ocean Blvd. Great fried fish, shrimp, oysters and scallops. Their cream pies are fantastic.

Took a tour of Brookgreen Gardens and learned that Rice was the most valuable pre-civil war plantation crop. Amazing. We figured tobacco or cotton.

Used my Garmin for directions and had a series of POIs loaded to force the Garmin to take the route that I wanted and worked great. However, I loaded an app on my Android Phone called MyTracks that records a track of your trip. Since my NUVI 350 doesn’t record my route, this worked great. I could save as a .kml file that I could load into Google Earth. It also gave me a neat graph showing my elevations and speeds and this was very interesting, especially going through the beautiful states of Virginia and West Virginia.

Glad to be home, but looking forward to maybe going to Charleston, SC next year for a few days, before Myrtle Beach.

I wish I was in the land of cotton,

My wife and I would go past the cotton fields and wondered how in the heck do they pick it. My wife comes from a farm and I'm familiar with combining, but couldn't figure how you'd harvest cotton.

Thanks for the education. It's very interesting.

Snow's falling! Welcome to Winter!

Trip this week out to B.C. - Kootenays. Snow followed me back to Alberta. Winter's here!

Took a 2 day trip to Port Townsend, WA

Nice little city with several nice hotels and restaraunts near the water.

Ocala National Forest

Our family went to Florida Finder's Fest (a Geocaching event) in Ocala National Forest. We had one GPS for driving around, and three more for Geocaching. Over 500 Geocachers attended. Perfect weather, had a great time!

mexico

gave my Garmin 275 to my bro to try it out during his family vacation in Mexico smile

Cotton Bales

The photo's under stompin the cotton into bales is misleading. The photo's are not bales. A special truck picks this up out of the field, takes it to the cotton gin to be gined,,,ie remove the seed from the cotton and then the bale is formed from the cotton minus the seed. The bale is about 5'by3'by2'with a weight of about 500lbs. Or thats the way it was done years ago and I believe thats the way it is still done. When I was on the farm growing up we picked it by hand but that was 50 years ago at the beginning of the cotton pickers as used now.

Garmin 3790 Next turn..?

I've been loosing this next turn information block on top left corner. Anyone experience same..?

Thanx BiLL Solomon

Not bales

You are right. I think they are called modules at this point in harvesting.

Friday night on I95

Made a trip south on I95 last night, unfortunately right around rush hour, returning before midnight. Traffic was heavy as expected, but the Veteran's Day holiday probably reduced the levels to terrible vs. horrible levels. Arrived on time and no major issues. The Android nav app provided an accurate estimate of the time required. Also had the Garmin Nuvi available as a backup, but did not need to activate that unit to successfully complete the mission.

Just around town this week...

but it sure helps when we're going to new places smile

We use Nuvi every day

Even for short trips. Often, I'll use the where to Go Home feature and let Jill's soothing voice guide us home. It makes driving so much nicer.

I was kept overnight but I'm looking at a month in a cast so down to typing with just a single finger on my left hand - and I'm right handed.

FL to IN tomorrow

Heading to Indiana tomorrow morning. Plan to go through Birmingham and will be taking it real easy in that area due to the serious financial situation they are in. It is a real shame, and I don't want to take any chances.

San Jose to Auburn CA

Went on a 200 mile trip to support a friend this weekend. My nuvi 760 got me their with no problems to a house on a tiny country road outside of town. Made it a very pleasant trip.

Cleveland to Ft. Myers FL.

Going to set my alarm for 5 hours from now, then drive to the airport. I have a window seat in row 22 of a 737. I plan on using the Navigon app on my phone to track progress of the flight just to pass the couple of hours.

Yup

You got it, John... fly north, pack up their car and drive it back south for them. They are later than usual this year. Normally they would have been down in October, but my wife's mother has been having eye problems and lots of doctor visits kept them from leaving any sooner.

just to visit family ahead of the Thanksgiving rush.

I just got done with a POI submission for Michigan Disc Golf courses and have been testing many of them to be sure they recorded and showed correctly on the screen. Been using a Nuvi 350 but have a 1450 coming.
