Raw file: Harriman trail parking 20111213.gpx (22.4 KB)

Includes 28 locations in the following areas:

  • United States: NY

POI Info: Parking for historic Bear Mountain and Harriman State parks. Some parking may be inside designated parking areas, while others are simply roadside cutouts. Descriptions include trail names and colors as designated on the NY/NJ trail conference maps. The names may be the trails as they intersect the parking area or nearby points of interest. I have made up some of the names myself, so searching the Internet may not yield any results. If the POI is a parking area symbol, I've used it or hiked through it to confirm the location. If the POI is a blue flag, the point was taken from the trail map in conjunction with Google Maps or Google Earth and is estimated, which may need correcting.

Enjoy

About: On October 29, 1910, 18 year old W. Averell Harriman presented a one million dollar check to the Palisades Interstate Park Commission along with a deed for 10,000 acres of land to be made into a park. This was along with a condition from Mary Averell Harriman (the mother) that plans to place a prison in the vicinity was to be scrapped. These lands that Harriman and Bear mountain enclose contain many trails, lakes, mines, shelters and ruins...even a town that was taken over by imminent domain, Doodletown.
