Communities in Illinois can not install speed cameras. Hizzoner & a spokesman are concerned about safety of the citizens. The mayor wants the legislature to pass a bill allowing the cameras.
“The idea is not to begin writing a lot of tickets. It’s about getting people to slow down. It’s about changing behavior,”..“Having an expectation that police can handle this on their own is unrealistic.”
Sure, the timing may be unfortunate that the bill got posted today. It has nothing to do with the budget,” Klein said. “I’d be happy if there were no revenues, but people don’t respond if there’s no penalty"....He stressed that the money raised would go toward transportation safety and infrastructure projects.
Yea right.
Every time I hear the phrase "It has nothing to do with the budget." from a public entity, you know, it has everything thing to do with the budget.
Chicago and the State of Ill. are hurting financially, and they are looking for every way possible, to suck in more money, under the cloak of "safety."
To my knowledge most of CPD squads are not even equipped with radars. Has speeding become a new issue in the city?

The last two paragraphs really sum up how this is not about safety.
