Nuvi 3490 and Mapsource

Anyone try to use Mapsource with the new Nuvi 3490LMT yet? I bought a new mapsource CD and the new 3490LMT. I installed Mapsource, and downloaded the latest update/version from garmin.com.

Mapsource will not see my 3490. It wants to look at my Forerunner 405CX instead???

Any suggestions?

(I know my nuvi is connected as my POI loader application sees it. Once I close POI loader and try Mapsource, well.....see above!)

Did the

Did the Mapsource CD come with any maps? Normally to use a Nuvi and Mapsource you'd need to do a map update to the Nuvi and use the option to also put a copy of the maps on your computer.

Garmin has discontinued development for Mapsource and is recommending that we use Basecamp instead. One of the advantages of Basecamp is that you don't need to have the maps on your computer. If you attach the Nuvi to the PC/Mac, Basecamp will use the maps installed on the GPS.

Well, Mapsource did come

Well, Mapsource did come with a very crude, very undetailed map. I ran the Mapsource update from the garmin site to bring it up to the latest version, but the map appeared unchanged. I just got my new 3490 yesterday and haven't messed much with it. It too, came with the latest map update as I did plug it in and register it, and the website's map updater said that it had no updates for maps available.

So I don't know about any option to copy maps from the Nuvi to the Mapsource program, but I can mess with it some after work and see if I can figure it out.

I'm assuming (haven't looked yet) that Basecamp is a Garmin product??

I'd just like to have some software to manage my favorites and saved POI's and to have a backup of them. It should prove handy in the event I want to add them to another GPS, or transfer to a new one.

My 3490LMT is replacing my old 765T, so when the wife gets home with it, I'll need to transfer my saved favorites from the 765 to the 3490...this was one of the main reasons for getting Mapsource.

Thanks for your input...any further advice will be welcomed and appreciated. I've had Nuvi's for years, but am totally new to the software side of the matter!

No need

No need to go to a lot of work to copy your favorites. Just copy the current.gpx file from your 765 to your computer and rename it temp.gpx. Then attach the 3490 to your computer and move the temp.gpx file to the GPX folder on the GPS. Reboot the 3490 and all your favorites should be there.

Basecamp is a Garmin product and can be downloaded from http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435 for free. You'll find it does pretty much everything that Mapsource did, plus a butch more stuff. The interface is very different so it does take some getting used to if your coming from the Mapsource world. Big advantage is that you can use the maps on your Nuvi with it where as with Mapsource, as you've seen, your pretty much out of luck as you can't use the Nuvi maps until you actually do a map update (do out next month). What your seeing is Mapsource now is just the basemap that comes with the software.

Although the nuvi 2405, 2505, and 3400 series devices are not compatible with MapSource, they are compatible with Garmin's BaseCamp program. BaseCamp is a program that allows you to view and organize maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks on your computer.

BaseCamp is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. Both downloads are available on our website at the page below:
