new map updates on an older nuvi

I have an older nuvi that does not have enough room on it to hold the newer map updates. the nuvi does have an sd card in it.

Is there a way to get the whole update on the nuvi?

thanks.

Use an SD Card

If you have a Lifetime Map subscription, down the new maps to your computer. Then using Mapinstall or Mapsource, you can transfer the entire map to your SD card.

You can download MapInstall here:

Sure there is

Put the new map on the SD card. Or delete a bunch of stuff in the Nuvi (unused language and text files), that might free up enough space.

Do you get an error message when you try to install the update? Are you telling Webupdater to delete the old map? Which Nuvi model is giving you the problem?

Delete language files and icon you don't use

You can always put them back on by using the webupdater. Most of us I would guess use 1 icon and 1 language file so by deleting excess ones you'll be surprised on the space you get back on the drive.

what about a new unit

A new unit may be a better bargain if your unit is several years old. If it does not display speed limits then a newer unit would give you the newest maps plus better features.

Backup Your Garmin Data

Regardless of what you decide to do, connect your Garmin to your computer and save all of the information from the Garmin in a separate folder on your computer. Old unit or brand new unit.

Just in case.

Since you are reading this post, why not RIGHT NOW go get your GPS and do a backup.

As pkdmslf says "just in case"

200W?

Assuming you're talking about a nuvi 200W, this thread shows that early 200W models had only 1GB total while later ones offered 2GB:

It'd be worthwhile checking your nuvi to see which you have. If a 1GB model, I expect that there's nothing you can do to get the full City Navigator North America map when doing an update other than by installing to a SD card. If a 2GB model, deleting unused voice, help files, etc. (after doing a full nuvi backup to a computer to be safe) may get you the full update without needing to move the map to the SD card since this model does not offer space-taking Lane Assist, Junction View, etc.:

If you already have lifetime updates on the nuvi, it's certainly worth doing whatever's possible to update the unit. But as others have suggested, a 200W at this point in time is probably not worth adding Lifetime Maps* and it may be worth looking to buying a new nuvi with LM. If looking to buy new, I strongly suggest checking the first link above and buying a new nuvi with 4 or more GB to meet future map update needs.

*...and most folks here suggest it's not worth buying a One-Time Update for almost any nuvi situation.

Thanks for the replies, I

Thanks for the replies, I have been meaning to get back with you all, but I have had no time, and I have very little time now.
I will do as suggested above and then get back with you as to what I find.

Thanks.
