Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? - September 2011

The original discussion topic started by CherylMASS back in 2007 has been very popular; with over 3500 replies it's grown to be the longest thread at POI Factory.

In order to make things easier to navigate (and help avoid future technical surprises), I'm going to start a new topic each month like we do for the joke thread.

Here is CherylMASS' original post, continued here...

CherylMASS wrote:

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

Thank you CherylMASS for starting the original "Keeping the Windmill Alive" thread at POI Factory.

Now let's continue posting here...

Just Yesterday!

Used it yesterday to run some errands around my son's college.

Trip

Used both of my GPS on a trip to Louisiana. My 3790lmt to keep me on the route and my 855 to locate fast food and restaurants. I kept my eye on the 3750 and my wife watched the 855 incase she needed to take a rest break. Both did well.

Bike Ride to the Airport and Air Show

Used the GPSMAP60CSx on the bike with TOPO maps to watch my bike ride to the local airport for the airshow and car show. There was a very cool C-5 flyover.

When we travel cross country, I keep a Garmin on my side (passenger window) and we have one to the side of the rear view mirror. That way if I want to change the settings to elevation, estimated time of arrival, or avoidances, we don't have to touch the personalized stored route on the "main" Garmin.

When we only had the one GPS my husband would get nervous when I started playing around with the settings, so this works out great. We have an new Garmin and still can use the older one. Love it.

My wife

knew better than to touch the GPS when we travel with just one GPS. Now she can do what she wants with the other GPS and not mess with the one with the route. I think that she is enjoying it with this setup. Don't have to ask me to check things on the one she can mess up, which she did on our last trip.

Downtown Washington DC

Instead of taking the Garmin 760, I went with an Apple iPad, and the map worked like a charm. It was easy to walk around and navigate off the iPad using a MiFi (rather than paying for 3G cellular service on the iPad). It was also handy in a long SuperShuttle ride for a side trip to see where in the inky black of night we were going.

Drove to Delaware for birthday party

This weekend, we drove up to my in-laws' house in Delaware where we had a combined birthday party for my son (turned 3 last month) and daughter (turns 1 next month).

Although this is a regular trip for us, we actually did need the GPS to route us around some road closures (in both MD and DE) caused by flooding from heavy rains on Friday.

Sierra Nevada Mountains...

This last August. Up above Lake Isabella at about 8600ft. In the Pine trees with a beautiful stream running thru the campground....

Funny, something about camping up there that ALWAYS makes the food taste better!!!

I wish I was still there!

Last Trip

Had a great last trip... did over 6,000 miles in 2 weeks. Went from Parris Island to Dallas, TX on the first day. That was over 1,000 miles in 24 hours to qualify for an Iron Butt Assoc. award. Then headed up to Denver, CO to visit an old friend. Spent 2 days there and left for Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone, and the Beartooth Highway. Overnighted and rode into Sturgis, SD for the bike rally. The trip back was uneventful...

We leave for...

the east coast next Sunday, I suppose you can call me a "Leaf Gazer" when I come back. I will be taking a 765t and a 360 with me, just in case! It never hurts to be prepared.

The 360 is for walking around in town, and the 765t is for the rental car, as we drive from Boston to Lancaster PA. should be a blast!

Anyway - will be on the road for a week or so.

Hope everyone (including me) has safe travels !

Will finally, after all these years, get to drive in Arkansas for the first time - Have driven, at one time or another, in every other state except Alaska and Arkansas.

Tampa/Sarasota Visit

Traveled from northeast Florida to Tampa via I-4 round trip with a quick visit to Sarasota.

The Ringling Art Museum in Sarasota was super - a must visit site.

Waypoints on My GPS were set before departure and the Nuvi2460LMT never missed a beat.

On one leg the GPS informed that a bridge was closed and that it was re-routing. This is a first for me.

Anyone ever had that happen to them?

It's been a while since I fired up the GPS. When I did it was dead. Just a few minutes on charge and it came back to life. Whew. I had apparently left it on after its last use.

If you took it with you on the plane, turned off, and did not power it up until getting to DC, that's normal. It needs to settle in to which of the GPS satellites it can see, and then begin to function. 5 minutes is quite normal for that.

Something similar happened in Miami when exiting the rental car terminal. I needed directions to the hotel, but the GPS kept on searching for satellites after we left the building. I had to stop the car at the side of the road for a minute or two until it got its bearings. I thought that back in DC it'd take the same 1-2 minutes, but 5? Anyway, now I know it's not unusual.

I had fun teasing Jill. I went around a new roundabout twice while navigating. She retaliated on me a little later when I asked for a detour around road construction.
