Do the red light alerts only pop up when you are driving a route?
I would like it if they poopped up even if you didnt have a route and are just using the map function (ie you did not program a destination to go to and are just driving around anyway).

they will pop up if there is no route planned .
Depending on model,
Depending on model, they will pop up if you turn GPS off and let the unit simulate driving the route.
