Adding custom audio proximity features to POI Files

I recently downloaded the red light camera POI file which came in a .csv format. I could easily load these locations onto my nuvi with the Garmin POI Loader and add a proximity alert, but I can't open a .csv in MapSource to easily edit or add to it. I wanted to add a audio file that says "Red light camera ahead" or something like that when I approach these intersections. This can easily be done in MapSource, but it won't open .csv files. I found a freeware program that converted the .csv to a .gpx which could then be opened in MapSource. It worked and I was able to associate my mp3 to all of the points in the file and load the .gpx onto my nuvi with Garmin POI Loader. It even shows a picture of a stoplight when you look at the details of the point on the nuvi.

I guess my question is, has anyone else been doing this and is there a more straight forward way? I haven't used POI Edit yet so maybe it does this.

Slightly easier...

If you want all the POI's in the file to have the same audio, you can just create an .mp3 with the same name as the .csv file. It used to work with .wav files too, but Garmin seem to have silently withdrawn the feature...

Did you edit the link for every waypoint individually?

Does GPX support MP3?

I just looked in the GPX Developer's Manual (http://www.topografix.com/gpx_manual.asp). I do not see any support for MP3 notification. How did you associate an MP3 file with the CSV file?

<link>

<link> statement in gpx.

"Documentation: A link to an external resource (Web page, digital photo, video clip, etc) with additional information."

There are some quite wacky rules in play though...
Mapsource will let you create multiple links, but POI Loader only takes any notice of the first one.

So for an individual waypoint, you can change the display icon (.bmp), or the alert sound (.mp3) or the associated jpeg. If you want to change all of them for a single waypoint you have to link to a directory instead. Now a different rules applies and if the mp3 has "Tourguide" in its name, you get an mp3 you can control.

If you want to change them all for every point, you have to have files with names that correspond to the name of the .csv / .gpx - or change every single link (hence my question to the OP - I was wondering if another way had been found?)

Adding MP3

It wasn't a csv file. I converted it to a .gpx so I could load it into MapSource. In MapSource you can right click on a waypoint and go to "properties". There is a "link" field at the bottom where you can add a .mp3 file. As long as this link is good when you use POI Loader it will get copied onto the GPS. The .mp3 is not actually stored inside of the .gpx file.

By the way, you can select the top waypoint, hold down the shift key, and then select the bottom waypoint. This way you can edit the properties of all of the waypoints at once.

.

Just to kinda chime in on what others are saying.

First of all, most of this is easier than you are making it. If you want to set the SAME custom audio for ALL the locations in your POI file, just name the mp3 identically to the cvs (or gpx) except for the extension. Put it in the same folder with your POI file on your PC and run POI Loader. The mp3 will be automatically associated with that file.

As you found out, MapSource won't open csv, but the are MANY coverters, so this isn't a big thing usually.

I, personally, would only use MapSource to attach custom audio if I was trying to have a DIFFERENT sound (like with a Tour Guide file) for each locations.

Mama is always right

Had to say that...

In a nut shell, MM is right. Don't over complicate things.

For simple files such as redlight cameras a single mp3 that will be the same for every point in that file will work just fine.
Example;
If you want it to say "Red light camera ahead" for each redlight camera location - name that mp3 the same as the csv file - ie, Redlight_Camera.csv you would name the mp3 as Redlight_Camera.mp3

You will then just need to have both files in the same location when you use poi loader.
For simple files like redlight cams, you really don't need to mess around with gpx conversion. Unless you want to look at the locations on the mapsource map, then of course you can do that and use the link feature to associate the mp3 to the file.

As stated above, TourGuide is a different animal and must be created using the gpx format. To date, I've found mapsource the easiest way to create TourGuides.
