Try doing a full charge on the battery. When the device is cery low on power you will have no controll of any screens.

Sounds Like the Touchscreen Needs Replacement...

Looks to me like it's almost certainly a defective touchscreen. These are actually relatively easy to replace for someone who's reasonably handy, and they're not very expensive, either. $10 is what I paid on eBay, and that includes shipping. Just go to eBay and search on "garmin nuvi 680 touchscreen". I prefer the 'Buy It Now' option; make sure you sort the results "lowest price + shipping" first.

If you use Google and YouTube, you can find plenty of instructions on how to do this safely.

Or, if you're not up to it, there are various repair centers that specialize in this sort of thing for reasonable prices. Sharcnet-USA is one that seems to have a pretty good reputation. http://www.sharc.net/gps_LCD_repair.htm

If you decide to give it a try yourself, I think you'll have a lot of fun and an intense sense of accomplishment once you get the unit back up and running. And after all, what have you got to lose? The worst-case scenario is $10, right? The best case scenario is a working Nuvi and a really big grin! The 680 sure isn't doing you any good sitting on the shelf!!! smile

Good luck!

Check this link for info on nuvi 6xx units and serial numbers in the section beginning with:

Notice: we have observed a high rate of failures on a newer style 4.3 inch touchscreen (6xx series) with a white tail cap, that the LCD manufacturer has been using.

660 went bad

Ours went bad a few weeks ago, imho not worth trying to fix even for $60 plus $10 for shipping. Bought the 2350LMT for $179. After seeing how a new unit performs, I realize how out-of-date a 6xx is. That's why I felt that the droid x was a better navi than my Garmin. Now that I have the 2350, I'm thinking that it performs better than the droid.

I realize that we're all not made of money, but sometimes there are cases where money is well-spent. Getting rid of a 6xx or 7xx and getting a new unit is just that. I honestly cannot imagine why a "repair" business where it costs $70 to replace the screen even exists....

Touchscreen

Wow John, I'm stunned at that comment. A lot of people like the units that they have. They don't want the pain of having to enter in all of their favorites into a new GPS (Yes it is easy to transfer them but many don't know how to do it). Plus, also remember, many people out there have purchased lifetime maps. Lifetime maps are not transferable to a new unit. Another thing to consider is that the parts for older models are easier to find and that the prices have dropped. The new LCD displays on the newer models are very expensive. Take a look at the factory's out-of-warranty price list. Compare new models to older models. Some of the rates on new models are close to the cost of a new unit, well over $125.00. I can tell you that my company has been around since 2007 and we can't keep up with the business that is coming in. FYI... we don't charge $70 for a screen change. smile

As for the lockup... the unit isn't locked up at all. If you press the on/off power button/flap you will be able to toggle the screen to the volume/FM menu, proving the unit is not locked up. The touchscreen is bad. It's like typing on your PC with the keyboard disconnected. smile

765t

I know my 765T is an old and out of date model, but it has everything I want including my lifetime maps. I have not seen anything in the new models that make me want one.

Limited lifespan - Jan 2012

I've had my 680 since 2007 and I;ve come to rely on the traffic updates, which work reasonably well in Phoenix and theother areas where I travel. With the MSN Traffic service being discontinued in January 2012, I will be looking for a replacement. Although there hasn't been any new units that I've seen that make me "gotta have them", I will replace it just for the traffic feature.

When I bought the 680, it was an expensive unit. Now that replacements are more reasonable, I won't be putting any more money into it. If mine breaks, I'll replace it earlier. But then again - traffic is more important to me.
