Garmin in talks to buy Navigon?

"It's hard out there for a company making endangered gadgets. According to Reuters, flailing satnav maker Navigon could be acquired by none other than Garmin, which has struggled itself to maintain strong handheld navigator sales in the face of stiff competition from smartphones. The deal could be worth somewhere in the "mid-double-digit million" Euro range -- a none-too-helpful estimate, but enough for us to understand that the personal navigator market is in such a state that Garmin could scoop up its rival for a pretty modest sum. Garmin, for its part, has been doing well, considering -- it's the top navigator brand in the US (a market Navigon long since exited), and its profit nearly tripled in the most recent quarter. That's largely thanks to those bestselling navigators, but also because the company's been wise enough to reinvent itself as a purveyor of running watches and GPS for boats. In any case, if the Navigon brand is going bye bye, it looks like we could find out as soon as this month."

I posted this too - Smartphone Forum :)

If this comes to pass, Garmin would have the best iOS app.
And the author of the article is an idiot for ignorance of Garmin's aeronautical division

.
Perhaps the best thing about it would be is, more timely and up-to-date maps?
This is where they could potentially excel against the competition as well.

I think you have Navteq and Navigon mixed up.

I think you have Navteq and Navigon mixed up. Garmin gets their maps from Navteq.
The company they would acquire is Navigon and it is now mainly a software company and doesn't have anything to do with map data.

Yes you did. I guess we both are regular readers of Engadget.

They were into PNDs but have transitioned to a software company. Their iOS navigation software app is better than Garmin's in my experience.

IMHO
IMO and limited experience, smartphones still can't compete with a dedicated GPSr. The GPS capability is a big battery drain on the phone. Also, ease of use is an issue for me.

There's an app for that.....

Most dedicated GPS receivers don't do very well on battery usage either in my experience unless they're specifically made for offroad/trail use. While my GPSMAP series did pretty well on AA batteries, my 765T will go for maybe 2 hours max without DC power.
There are several FREE apps available for smartphones that help with battery management quite a bit.
The longest I've used my droid outside of the car (i.e. with no charging) was 5 hours playing golf and it did just fine. It would be nice if someone would design a battery management tool for smartphones specifically for use during navigation where the display could go to sleep while still working as a GPS receiver. You could then "wake" the display when you needed to. I suspect that the smartphone displays use far more power than the built-in GPS receivers do...

True. My 760 can go between 2-3 hour depending on the backlight setting.

My Garmin Mobile XT has Backlight Override settings. Available options are: Always on, On when charging, On when navigating, On when speaking, None. I set mine to "On when speaking" so I can see the map (if necessary) when it tells me to get ready to turn. A few seconds later, the backlight switches off automatically.
