Loading POI's as tourguide

We are going to tour Maine soon and I downloaded offbeat attraction POI to my 3790t, and I named the file as tourguide so that as we are driving it'll alert us of a coming attractions. What I wonder is, although it does give me the alert sound when it's close to a POI (I set the radius to 32,000 feet), why can't I click on the alert icon and see more information or tell it to go? Am I missing something? Please advise.

You have to go back to where

You have to go back to where to,extras and custom pois then touch the poi you want to go to and select go.I put a suggestion into Garmin some time ago to add this feature. One member on site posted that the 855 or either the 885 would do what you are trying.I know the 265 will not.No other user has posted any different fo other models except the one I listed.

Go button on 285W

On my 285W I can do part of that when the map is in 2D mode.

If I am viewing the map in 3D mode, I can tap the screen and it goes into 2D mode. At the bottom of the screen there are 3 buttons: Back, Save, And Go.

I can tap anywhere on the screen, including on a poi icon, and then tap the Go button. But it does not show the extra information this way.

IIRC my 255W would do the same but I accidently killed it and so can not verify for that one.

2D Screen

I just tried that on the 265.Set a location to go to and in route using 3d.Touched the screen once for the 2d and the Back, Save, And Go appeared on bottom of screen.I just touched any location(didn't have to be a icon) and it came up as a via point.Don't remember that being there before but has been a long time since I had tried it after sending the suggestion in to Garmin.Hitting back button puts you back in 3d.My suggestion was to be able to hit the alert tab.A little hard to touch that little icon right on the mark.

Hit that spot

Yes it is. Helps to zoom in a bit more and I have an old pen with a small diameter rounded rubber coated end that is great for use as a stylus to hit the map spots and poi icons.

Touch icon...

cool

On most units you should be able to touch the sound icon on the screen for the TourGuide that is playing and it will give you the option of going to it.

I KNOW it works on all 7xx and 8xx units.

the next time it goes off hit the sound icon and try it.

I couldn't help but notice

I couldn't help but notice that you wrote "tourguide" in your first post ... I get a little nervous when I see any poster type "tourguide" instead of "TourGuide" (note the two uppercase letters, T and G.

A TourGuide won't work unless you name your file correctly.

I think it would be a benefit to all posters, current and future, if we all type "TourGuide" correctly.

Of course, I'm just anal ...

Also noticed you see a 6+ mile radius for the desired TourGuide (32,000 feet). That's quite a wide radius ... in some cases, around mountains, you'll drive yourself crazy because the desired POI might be within 6 miles, but be on the other side of a mountain range ... and quite a bit farther (further?) because there is no direct path to your desired target.

Or 6 miles of water

On Long Island, the POI could be in Connecticut across 6 miles of Long Island Sound.

TourGuide

Sorry, I was just lazy and didn't type the correct file name here. But yes, I do have the file name for my NUVI 3790 as attraction_TourGuide. Per your suggestion, I changed the radius and now it's at 12,000 feet (or should I have made it even shorter?). The reason I did 32,000 before was that since we are going to Maine, I thought every attractions would probably be far apart. Therefore, setting it to more than 5 miles would give us a better chance of seeing an attraction.

When the alert for an up coming attraction sounded, I clicked on the icon as one other here suggested but that just made it go into 2D map view. Although I could then click anywhere on the map, and it'll give me the option of going there, I would like to see if what I clicked was the attraction I wanted. (For a test run, I did a set location in NY since it has the most concentrated attractions in short radius. Once in 2D view you can see numerous attractions near by. But by clicking on them there's no way to tell what attraction it is). So far, it only gives you the address and not the name associated with attraction.

The only way to see the information of the alerted attraction is just go all the way out to main menu, and click EXTRA to see the POI's.

I read here that some people have written to Garmin for such suggestions, but why Garmin is so slow to react is beyond me. We are their unpaid testers and ideas/suggestions coming from us should be taken into great considerations.

That's what I figured

Thanks for letting me know. I just want to make sure that I'm not missing something on my 3790. It seems the most logical thing to do would be to be able to click on the alert icon instead of going all the way out into EXTRA.

Same here.Hopefully they

Same here.Hopefully they will approve the suggestion I put in.They said they sent it to the dept to be considered.

Well, I will occasionally just run down the road with the respective Extras POI file screen up ... allowing me to occasionally glance at the GPS to find out what POI is getting closer versus farther away ... the VOICE prompts still sound off for turns, etc.

"Look honey, the world's largest ball of string is only 5 miles away now!"

Since you are interested is seeing what "offbeat" attractions are along the route ... you might consider just allowing the Extra POI file display (mashing on the various attractions as they get closer.

As to TourGuide distances ... the largest distance I've ever used is 2 miles (10400 feet). Even then, the actual driving distance is usually much farther away.

Originally Garmin figured TourGuides would be used for people developing walking tours of various cities, like New Orleans or Paris ... rather than those of us blowing down the road at 60 mph.

"look honey, the GPS just said Cafe Dumonde is 400 feet from where we are standing! Do you see it?"

Going to a TourGuide Alert

I think glwilbert gave you the best answer. When the GPS gets a TourGuide alert a special SPEAKER icon (as it is called in the Garmin manual) is displayed on the map screen. One tap of this icon takes you immediately to the PREVIEW screen for that specific TourGoide POI, complete with all of the info as well as the MORE tab.

I just wish this were the same for regular alerts. But when you think about, they are already along your route. So it's not like you won't be going to them already. I just wish I could see the PREVIEW page quickly like you can with TourGuides. Consider the Rest Areas file. It would be nice to quickly look up which services are available before stopping. Some files do have a lot of good information to share.
