TTS voices issue

I've got a Nuvi 880 which I have been very happy with. It just started a new trick. When I turned it on last month, it began speaking in Afrikaans rather than the usual English. I pulled over and looked and English wasn't available. Fortunately was able to select French which I understand well enough to get to my destination.

After I got there I looked and the gps was no longer seeing any of the TTS voices. Pulled the battery out and the reset seems to have fixed it until today. Today, it did the same thing, however pulling out the battery didn't help.

Just tried reloading the firmware which hopefully will help this from happening again.

Anyone got any ideas on this?

.

Not sure why the unit is losing voices (someone else will chime in) but in the future all you have to do is run WebUpdater and you can download specific voices.

It's not a matter of

It's not a matter of downloading the voices, because they are already still on the gps. It's just that the gps can not see the files for some reason.

Try doing a hard reset

and see if that solves the problem.

I never have but ...

After you make sure all your voice files are present on your nuvi, you might want to glance through this thread about defragging your nuvi drive to fix a strange problem. I would definitely do a complete backup of your nuvi first.

or the following could also accomplish about the same re-aligning the files.

I have read on another site where a user completely copied all files from the GPS to his hard drive. Then deleted all files off the GPS and then immediately copied all of the files back on.

I have never tried either solution and don't know if they will solve your problem. I just keep them in the back of my head incase I have any strange, unexplained problems appear.

Hmm

Hmm, that's a toughie and I can't find anything on the internet describing anything similar.

Are the missing voices stock or did you tinker with them with a voice editor or some such thing?

Two things you may consider (unless someone can suggest that this is a terrible idea) is to:

-I think the diagnostic mode in your nuvi has a test that can be run for corrupted voices. This could be run to see what it suggests.

-back up your whole nuvi on a computer to be safe, then with the nuvi USBed to the computer, delete all the problem voices on the nuvi. Then with WebUpdater, check for updates and you'll be given the option of downloading and installing all those English TTS voices that you had just deleted. That'd be a way to get fresh English language voices onto the nuvi in case the old ones were corrupted.

au revoir (or should I say Totsiens?)

The voice files are stock. I

The voice files are stock. I keep the gps up todate but have never customized anything. I really think this is a software issue and not a corrupt file thing. Once the gps is reset, it sees the files and functions normally, as it has for a long time.

It's just one of those very odd things that happens with computers/software. It's just it's happen to me twice now in two months.

I've looked on the internet too, and found nothing, which is why I posted out here.

I appreciate all of the comments, but guess that next time I'll just have to bring this up with Garmin.
